BIM adoption and implementation for architectural practices

Yusuf Arayici; Paul Coates; Lauri Koskela; Mike Kagioglou; C. Usher; K. O'Reilly

Purpose – This paper aims to present a systematic approach for building information modelling (BIM) implementation for architectural SMEs at the organizational levelDesign/methodology/approach – The research is undertaken through a knowledge transfer partnership (KTP) project between the University of Salford and John McCall Architects (JMA) a SME based in Liverpool. The overall aim of the KTP is to develop lean design practice through BIM adoption. The BIM implementation approach uses a socio‐technical view, which does not only consider the implementation of technology but also considers the socio‐cultural environment that provides the context for its implementation. The action research oriented qualitative and quantitative research is used for discovery, comparison, and experimentation as it provides “learning by doing”.Findings – The strategic approach to BIM adoption incorporated people, process and technology equally and led to capacity building through the improvements in process, technological infr...

New Concepts of Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) Utilizing BIM Benchmarking Techniques and Sensing Devices

Paul Coates; Yusuf Arayici; Z Ozturk

Traditionally Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) is conducted against the prescribed performance specification and it mainly relies on two activities; i) The effective collection of real world data and information and ii) the formulation of this data / information into models that allow trends and deviations to be observed. However, it is required to gain efficiencies by identifying potentially easier and more economical methods and tools for the collection of data such as wireless sensors. Furthermore, with the advent of cloud computing, data storage and processing can also become easier and more economical too. Subsequently, it can be possible not only to compare a building performance against its initial performance specification but also benchmark a building against similar properties.

Optimization of the BIM authoring tool in architectural practice : a case study approach

Paul Coates; Yusuf Arayici

Construction companies are facing barriers and challenges in Building Information Modelling (BIM) adoption as there is no clear guidance or best practice studies from which they can learn and build up their capacity for BIM use to increase productivity, efficiency, and quality. One of the key challenges in the BIM adoption is the ability of optimization of a selected BIM authoring tool according to a company’s needs and requirements. This paper explains the approach for the optimization of BIM technology selected in a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project, undertaken between the University of Salford and John McCall Architects. The BIM implementation approach in the KTP used a socio-technical view that considered both the implementation of technology and its socio-cultural environment. The adoption and optimisation used the action research oriented qualitative and quantitative research for discovery, comparison, and experimentation it provided for “learning by doing.”
