The objective of this paper is to present a study on the stage of development of logistic organization on the commercial and industrial companies belonging to Brazilian supply chain in food industry. The industrial and commercial companies were compared in relation to the degree of sophistication of their logistic organization, based on a model developed by Bowersox and Daugherty (1992), and adapted by Lavalle (1995). The results, based on field research, indicate that industrial companies have a higher level of operational complexity than commercial companies, and as a consequence they seek higher flexibility on their operations by means of a more sophisticated logistic organization.

Brazil and Argentina rank, respectively, as the first and third largest economies in Latin America. They are part of the Mercosur Common Market and have both experienced considerable environmental change in recent years following the adoption of stabilisation programmes to fight soaring levels of inflation and regain control of vital economic variables. A feature of both programmes has been a competitive shock through trade liberalisation, deregulation, and privatisation programmes. However, there has been a time lag in the adoption of such policies in each country.

The main objective of this paper is to present a rational model for cost allocation in the transportation activity as a key element for designing and maintaining partnerships between shippers and carriers. The utilization of the proposed cost allocation model for a real case situation gave rise to several conclusions. The most important of them is the fact that the cost allocation system currently used by Brazilian shippers and carriers underestimate the cost of short routes and overestimate the longer ones. This is mainly due to high levels of inefficiency in transportation, most of them observed in the operations of loading and unloading, which take six hours on average. Based on the above issue, the paper explores the development of the concept of partnership between shippers and carriers. The adoption of a productivity and quality program which includes an agreement between shippers and carriers over a common cost allocation system, provides several metrics on cost, efficiency and productivity that help to improve loading and unloading operations. The paper concludes with the description of the main causes that affect efficiency on transportation in Brazil: organization, procedures and technologies.

The main objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of the logistics sophistication of Brazilian shippers on the acquisition pattern of 3PL (third-party logistics) service providers. The conceptual model of logistics sophistication and the major dimensions and variables relating to the acquisition pattern were defined and a questionnaire was sent to 218 Brazilian shippers listed on the Revista Exame ranking. Based on the 93 questionnaires returned, the analyses conducted indicate that the most sophisticated shippers are durable goods manufacturers and that they contract 3PL services providers for inventory management and higher value added services. In essence, these results indicate that the most sophisticated shippers seek 3PL service providers capable of managing logistics trade-offs such as inventory levels vs. asset utilization levels. These implications on the selection criteria of 3PL service providers are also discussed.
