Wool samples from various fleeces regions of Polwarth and Corriedale hogget ewes were analysed following two different sequences in order to record wax and suint percents, suint colour and pH and scoured wool colour. In the first method, the wax was extracted before the suint (Wax + Suint) and the second extracted suint before wax (Suint + Wax). The wax percent was greater to Wax + Suint method (P 0.05) into a smaller yellowness index (Y-Z). The correlations between characteristics within methods recorded medium values.

Wool samples from various fleece regions (back, shoulder, britch and mid-side) of Polwarth and Corriedale hogget ewes were analysed in order to observe under which yolk analysis methodology (Wax extraction before Suint or Suint + Wax) the yolk traits showed the best correlation coefficients with scoured wool colour (Y-Z). The correlations between suint pH, colour, absorbancy and percent and wax percent with brightness and scoured wool colour were higher in Wax + Suint method (P < 0.01) to both breeds. The coefficients to Corriedales showed smaller values from those obtained with Polwarths. The suint pH, colour and absorbancy traits recorded stronger relationship with Y-Z than suint percent itself ( r = 0.62, 0.50, 0.61 vs. 0.36 in the Wax + Suint method to Polwarths). Wax percent had a medium coefficient correlation, significantly only to Polwarths, with Y-Z (negative value). Looking multiple regression analysis, it was possible to understand that suint pH and absorbancy and wax/suint ratio determined 36% of variations ocurred with Y-Z.

The alm of this work was to establish the effects of ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) pastures in two tillage systems on performance in the late rearing and weight at mating of hogget ewes Polwarth sheep. The hogget ewes were eight months old and had 29.873Kg liveweight, allocated in a completely randomized design with the treatments: ryegrass in conventional tillage (A/C) vs. ryegrass with minimum tillage- (A/S). The analysis of variance showed that A/C pasture were superior (P<0,05) for liveweight gain. Conclusions: 1) the ryegrass pasture in conventional tillage is superior in liveweight gain: 2) the ryegrass pastures in both tillage systems are superior to those performances of traditional breeding sheep conditions raised on native pastures, largely used in the Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil.
