-The evolution strategy of NGN laboratory towards the converged networks based on IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) as trends and aims for implementation of converged NGN network is presented in the article. This article describes actual implementation of NGN laboratory and future planned extensions and integration work for incorporating IMS core elements to our laboratory as unified service control subsystem. Existing NGN solution includes applications and our experiences with integrations of applications and their usability.

New technologies and advances enable the evolution of digital television and IPTV. Next step in IPTV evolution, which is actually quite frequently being discussed in the telecommunication community, industry and also standardization bodies like ETSI TISPAN or ITU-T, is the evolution of the Next Generation Network (NGN) architecture in order to provide the IPTV services over same NGN infrastructure. This chapter will explain main trends driving the IPTV evolution and highlight the most relevant standardization efforts in this area. Several concepts of IPTV architecture are presented as well as main differences and possible migration scenarios amongst various alternative solutions like non-NGN IPTV, NGN non-IMS, IMS based IPTV and the converged NGN IPTV architecture.

This paper presents a novel concept and prototype implementation of hybrid IPTV service based on IMS and DVB-H technologies. In the hybrid service, both traditional broadcast and unicast transmission technologies are used to deliver IPTV content. It is argued how such service scenario is effective and beneficial for hybrid use cases. The original technical contributions to ETSI technical report TR 182 030 about IMS-IPTV interconnection with DVB-H technology are presented in paper as well as description of our prototype implementation done within Celtic Netlab project.

This paper describes an approach for interworking scenarios between Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) based and non SIP based frameworks (e.g. web services) in case of the presence management service. The characteristics of the concept of a centralized presence management will be introduced.

The progress and evolution trends in the area of ICT and ICT infrastructure based on convergence processes create new opportunities. Service providers and network operators can provide a wide spectrum of multimedia services and applications to end users. The IPTV services represent a specific group of multimedia services which are in the sphere of interest of the telecommunication technical community but also subscribers. Standardization bodies like ETSI TISPAN or ITU-T have defined standards for NGN-based IPTV architecture and services (IMS and non-IMS). The paper evaluates possibilities and potential architecture for concept of converged NGN IPTV. New vision of the converged NGN IPTV architecture is presented together with proposed enhancements compared to IMS-based IPTV where single converged platform can serve fixed, mobile, or wireless terminals. The concept for IPTV service roaming with mobility support and different interconnection scenarios are discussed with intention to show potential user benefits.

The main evolution trends of NGN architecture towards unified service control based on IMS principles are presented in the article. The actual implementation of NGN testbed platform including extensions and integration of application is described. We also provide an overview of the ongoing incorporation and integration of IMS core elements within the actual architecture. The existing NGN solution includes communication, collaborative community and e-learning applications and highlights the benefits of our experience in the integration of those applications and the usability in education process. We explain also the main NGN technology issues and topics for possible future research and education activities planed for the NGN Lab testbed.

In this paper a new platform for distance learning based on student centric model with a focus on a role of Recommendation System in the whole project is described. Fields like learning management system, virtual laboratories, augmented reality, assessment method and multimodal system are included in this paper. Second part is devoted to recommendation engine. Two main recommendation methods, content-based and collaborative filtering, are described. Last section describes the integration of recommendation engine to the e-learning process and a potential usage of the engine in education.

Personal video recording (PVR) is service which user knows time ago previously mainly with video cassette recorder and later with DVD recorders. Actually this service has been adapted by Telco services providers and included to their IPTV offers (IP based television). Several basic or advance scenarios and implementation are supported by existing or actually standardized NGN based IPTV solutions (e.g. local, client or network PVR). We discussed of use cases and implementation of prototype for advance PVR service which combine advantages of client or network PVR and enable provide advance IPTV services which required content recording and flexible manipulation and user access over single application platform.
