The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of relationship information for selecting soybean progenies as to their productivity, and oil and protein contents, using mixed models for the prediction of breeding values. Nine hundred F4:6 and 200 F4:7 soybean progenies were evaluated in the seasons 2010/2011 and 2011/2012, respectively. The progenies were obtained from multiple crosses from 57 parents. Data were analyzed using random models (least squares) and mixed models BLUP/REML (best linear unbiased prediction/restricted maximum likelihood). The highest values of predicted gains were obtained by BLUP/REML. The breeding values predicted with the use of BLUP/REML without relationship information were highly correlated with the ones obtained with the random model, and the selected progenies were rather coincident. The inclusion of the relationship matrix resulted in the selection of different progenies and in higher accuracy of breeding values.

The objective of this work was to validate the association of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers for the genes FAD3A, FAD3B, and FAD3C with the linolenic acid content (18:3) in soybean seeds and to analyze the influence of the genetic parameters of these markers on this trait. One hundred and eighty‑five F2 progenies derived from a cross between A29 (mutant for the three FAD3 genes, 1% 18:3 content) and Tucunare (wild‑type genotype, 11% 18:3 content) were genotyped. The molecular markers for genes FAD3A, FAD3B, and FAD3C explained the variations in 18:3 content of the F2 and F2:3 segregating populations. In addition, allelic substitutions in the FAD3A locus provide greater variations in 18:3 content than substitutions in the other two loci.

Estimativa de freqüência de recombinação no mapeamento genético de famílias de irmãos completos

Leonardo Lopes Bhering; Cosme Damião Cruz; Pedro Ivo Vieira Good God

The objective of this work was to obtain the estimates of recombination frequency, through simulation, for different situations in genetic mapping involving full sibling families. A genome with three linkage groups simulated, each one with 11 molecular marks which were multi-allelic, codominants, with saturation of 10 cM. Starting from this genome, two situations were simulated: one with informative genitors, and other with genitors formed randomly. Once all the recombination frequencies were estimated, it was found out that in completely informative loci, the recombination frequency can be calculated among equal pairs of loci starting from the gametic frequency of each genitor, or starting from the genotipic frequency of the progeny. For partially informative loci, the recombination frequency starting from the united genotipic frequency is more appropriate.

Soybeans contain about 30% carbohydrate, mainly consisting of non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) and oligosaccharides. NSP are not hydrolyzed in the gastrointestinal tract of monogastric animals. These NSP negatively affect the development of these animals, especially the soluble fraction. This work aimed to establish a method to quantify NSP in soybeans, using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and to estimate correlations between NSP, oligosaccharides, protein and oil. Sucrose, raffinose + stachyose, soluble and insoluble NSP contents were determined by HPLC. Oil and protein contents were determined by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). The soluble PNAs content showed no significant correlation with protein, oil, sucrose and raffinose + stachyose contents, but oligosaccharides showed a negative correlation with protein content. These findings open up the possibility of developing cultivars with low soluble NSP content, aiming to develop feed for monogastric animals.

Validade empírica das redes de polissemia para o significado preposicional

Aparecida de Araújo Oliveira; Pedro Ivo Vieira Good God

Abstract : This paper evaluates the empirical validity of a polysemy network proposed for the preposition em in Brazilian Portuguese, by comparing the linguist’s and the non-specialist language user’s views of categorization. The network was based on the Schematic Network cognitive model of R. Langacker (2008, 1987), with scheme/instance and semantic extension relationships, and involved 48 sentences taken from the internet, which represented 24 usage patterns of em as defined by the linguist. Thirty-two undergraduate students with no training in linguistics, all native speakers of Brazilian Portuguese, took part as subjects in a psycholinguistic experiment in which they sorted these sentences according to similarities perceived in the meaning of em. After completing this task, the participants reported their categorization strategies in individual interviews. A dissimilarity matrix based on the participants’ classification was subjected to cluster analyses by the Ward (1963) and Tocher (cited in RAO, 1952) methods. The latter revealed seven categories created by the participants, four of which exhibited stronger semantic motivation than the other three. Participants differed in the number of groups they formed, and each participant created groups of different sizes. As well as coherent connections among categories, the results showed an important level of isomorphism between the originally proposed network and the participants’ evaluation, corroborating the relational structure of the network and a significant part of its granularity. Overall, the study also confirmed the greater predominance of space over the other domains and of time among non-spatial domains. Keywords : empirical validity; categorization; polysemy network; preposition; psycholinguistic experiment.
