The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between basketball players that have participated in the Spanish national team at different age categories and their progression through these categories. This progress is differentiated according to sex. The data for this study contain information about 320 players (163 females and 157 males). Results show that only a small percentage of players recognized as talented young players reached athletic excellence when adults. The evolution of the level of participation for females and males was similar. There was a break in the continuity of participation when comparing under-16 and senior categories. This rupture is also observed in female players in the move from under-18 to senior categories.

This investigation examined the relationship between implicit ability beliefs and self-determined motivation. The sample was comprised of 775 young athletes between the ages of 12 and 17 competing at national level in Spain. The participants completed the Spanish version of the Conceptions of the Nature of Athletic Ability Questionnaire (CNAAQ-2) and the Sport Motivation Scale (SMS). The results revealed a positive and significant correlation between stable ability beliefs and learning ability, and between self-determined motivation and perceived sports ability. To the contrary, stable entity beliefs were negatively correlated with self-determined motivation. Competitiveness in sports was significantly predicted by self-determined motivation, and the latter, in its turn, was positively predicted by learning belief and negatively by stable entity beliefs.

Traditionally, the process of teaching and learning has come from the election, by the coach, of those technical and tactical contents considered appropriate depending on the category, and from this point on, has turned all the planning, leaving out the teaching of the rules to an occasional appearance, without a prior organization in most of the cases. If we consider that the rules of game are a key element for the game, we could start to help the player to learn the technical and tactical means from the knowledge of the rules of game. With this study, we try to understand the current state of regulations in the stage of Minibasket and understand what is the role of rules in the introduction to basketball and how to sequence the teaching and learning of technical and tactical means from the rules.
