In this paper, we demonstrated a passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber (EDF) laser by incorporating a tungsten disulfide (WS2) film SA fabricated by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method. The WS2 film was thickness-dependent, which had two different states: the bulk WS2 [faced to plasma plume] and tiny WS2 flakes [in the shadow of plasma plume]. This SA device demonstrated low insertion loss (IL) and high power tolerance ability. Interestingly, the SA device possessed different nonlinear absorption regimes related with the film states. By employing this new type of SA, we obtained stable fundamental mode-locking (FML) at pump power of 54 mW, and the generated soliton pulse had pulse duration of 675 fs and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 65 dB. At the maximum pump power of 395 mW, we also obtained up to 1 GHz repetition rate of harmonic mode-locking (HML) with pulse duration of 452 fs and SNR of 48 dB. The experimental results show that WS2-PLD film can serve as a promising SA for ultrafast laser systems.

We report the generation of tunable single-, switchable and tunable dual-, and stable triple-wavelength dissipative solitons (DSs) in an all-normal-dispersion mode-locked Yb-doped fiber laser based on a graphene-oxide saturable absorber (GOSA) without additional components (such as optical filter, or fiber grating). The tunable single-wavelength DS have a wide wavelength-tunable range of 16.4 nm. The dual-wavelength DSs not only have a wavelength-tunable range (about 10 nm) but also have variable wavelength spacing (3.8-13.8 nm). The formation dynamics of the triple-wavelength DSs was also investigated experimentally. The different operations of tunable single-, switchable and tunable dual-, and stable triple-wavelength DSs depend on the strength of the cavity birefringence. The simple, compact all-fiber DS laser with lasing wavelength tunability and flexibility can meet great potential for applications.

A cell-type saturable absorber has been demonstrated by filling the single mode photonic crystal fiber (SMPCF) with tungsten disulfide (WS2) nanosheets. The modulation depth, saturable intensity, and non-saturable loss of this SA are measured to be 3.53%, 159 MW/cm2 and 23.2%, respectively. Based on this SA, a passively mode-locked EDF laser has been achieved with pulse duration of 808 fs and repetition rate of 19.57 MHz, and signal-noise-ratio (SNR) of 60.5 dB. Our results demonstrate that the cell-type WS2 nanosheets SA can serve as a good candidate for short-pulse mode locker.

By utilizing the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method, we fabricated a kind of microfiber-based topological insulator (TI) saturable absorber (SA) which has inherent merits of effective and robust properties. We also proposed a newly explanation for the impact of nonlinear effect of SA on the harmonic mode-locking (HML) behavior. Upon employing on the SA, we achieved stable fundamental mode-locking (FML) at central wavelength of 1562.4 nm with pulse duration as short as 320 fs. By adjusting the intracavity polarization state at maximum pump power of 395 mW, we obtained stable femtosecond harmonic soliton pulse generation with repetition rate of 2.95 GHz and output power of 45.3 mW. Our results demonstrated that the microfiber-based TI PLD film SA is a promising device for practical multi-GHz ultrashort pulses generation.

A novel, simple, and compact optical fiber directional bending vector sensor based on Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The device consists of a piece of seven-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) sandwiched between two single mode fibers (SMFs) with a lateral offset splicing joint that covering two cores of PCF. Bending sensitivity of the seven-core PCF based MZI is changed by an axial rotation angle, which shows its capacity for recognizing positive and negative directions. Within a curvature range of -7.05 m-1 to 7.05 m-1, the calculated bending sensitivities of two resonant central wavelengths with opposite fiber orientations are 1.232 nm/m-1 and 1.174 nm/m-1, respectively. This novel MZI is formed by invoking interference between the LP01-like supermode and other higher order supermodes in the core, which leads to insensitive to ambient refractive index (ARI). We have also investigated the transmission characteristics of the sensor with the temperature change.

A novel saturable absorber (SA) was fabricated by coating the topological insulator (TI) film on microfiber using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method. The TISA device had an insertion loss of ~1.25 dB, a saturable intensity of 26.7 MW/cm2, a modulation depth of ~5.7%, and a nonsaturable loss of 20.5%. Upon employing this SA device, we established a passively mode-locked EDFL and achieved nearly free-chirped soliton pulse with 286 fs of pulse duration and >73 dB of signal to noise ratio (SNR). This result clearly evidences that the PLD is an effective scheme for practical SA device fabrication.

We first reported that the topological insulator (TI) nanosheets solution filled in photonic crystal fiber can operate as an effective saturable absorber (SA) with the merits of low-insertion loss (~0.42 dB), long interaction length (>10 cm), and high-power tolerance. This SA device exhibited a saturable intensity of 14.9 MW/cm2, modulation depth of 19.1%, and nonsaturable loss of 25% at 1060 nm. Upo employing, this device rendered us to establish an ytterbium-doped all-fiber laser oscillator, where stable evanescent wave mode-locking operation has been achieved. This letter provided a new way of utilizing the unique nonlinear optical property of TI.

Femtosecond optical pulses have applications in optical communication, astronomical frequency combs, and laser spectroscopy. Here, a hybrid mode-locked erbium-doped fiber (EDF) laser with topological insulator (TI) is proposed, for the first time to our best knowledge. The pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method is employed to fabricate the fiber-taper TI saturable absorber (TISA). By virtue of the fiber-taper TISA, the hybrid EDF laser is passively mode-locked using the nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE), and emits 70 fs pulses at 1542 nm, whose 3 dB spectral width is 63 nm with a repetition rate and transfer efficiency of 95.4 MHz and 14.12%, respectively. Our experiments indicate that the proposed hybrid mode-locked EDF lasers have better performance to achieve shorter pulses with higher power and lower mode-locking threshold in the future.

Dark solitons, which have better stability in the presence of noise, have potential applications in optical communication and ultrafast optics. In this paper, the dark soliton formation in erbium-doped fiber lasers based Sb(2)Te(3) saturable absorber (SA) is first experimentally demonstrated. The Sb(2)Te(3) SA is fabricated by using the pulsed laser deposition method. The generated dark solitons are centered at the wavelength of 1530 nm and repetition rate of 94 MHz. Analytic solutions for dark solitons are also obtained theoretically.

In this paper, we demonstrate a high-damage-resistant tungsten disulfide saturable absorber mirror (WS2-SAM) fabricated by magnetron sputtering technique. The WS2-SAM has an all-fiber-integrated configuration and high-damage-resistant merit because the WS2 layer is protected by gold film so as to avoid being oxidized and destroyed at high pump power. Employing the WS2-SAM in an Erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) with linear cavity, the stable Q-switching operation is achieved at central wavelength of 1560 nm, with the repetition rates ranging from 29.5 kHz to 367.8 kHz and the pulse duration ranging from 1.269 μs to 154.9 ns. For the condition of the maximum pump power of 600 mW, the WS2-SAM still works stably with an output power of 25.2 mW, pulse energy of 68.5 nJ, and signal-noise-ratio of 42 dB. The proposed WS2-SAM configuration provides a promising solution for advanced pulsed fiber lasers with the characteristics of high damage resistance, high output energy, and wide tunable frequency.
