The utilization of underwater robotic vehicles has known an increasing importance in many marine activities. The robotic vehicle is equipped with a propulsion system and controlled by a human operator. To simplify tasks of the operator, a control system guaranteeing the automation of elementary robot’s behaviours is often applied. In the paper, a control system supporting the robot spatial motion along a reference path is presented. A waypoint line-of-sight scheme is incorporated and Genetic Algorithms are applied to calculate command signals. Selected results of computer simulations are inserted to demonstrate quality and correctness of the proposed approach.

Today, almost 80% of cargo is transported by sea. Most of the global maritime shipping operations are performed in the direction East – West, through the southern routes, i.e. Singapore - Suez Canal - Gibraltar - Europe. The total fuel cost is the major concern and the main drawback of these routes. According to the latest statistics and analyses, the price of fuel is growing and such a trend will cause a great impact on the economies of developing countries. For these reasons, new alternative maritime routes, in which the optimization of transportation in the maritime transport network can be achieved, are to be found. There is a possibility of establishing such routes in the areas of high latitudes where climatological changes and diminishing ice open up entirely new possibilities for shipping and present completely new challenges in the global shipping industry. Through the comparative analysis of the main routes and the SWOT method, this paper discusses the advantages, potential and importance, as well as the level of reliability, threats and disadvantages of using the areas of high latitude in maritime transport.

STRESZCZENIE W artykule przedstawiono cele i metody diagnostyki drganiowej okrętowych turbinowych silników spalinowych ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem badań w procesie rozruchu i zatrzymania silnika.

Abstract This paper presents operability guidelines for seafarers on a product tanker which navigates in the Adriatic Sea during heavy weather. Tanker route starts from the Otranto strait in the south to the island Krk in the north of Adriatic Sea. Heavy weather is caused by south wind called jugo (blowing from E-SE to SS-E, sirocco family). Operability guidelines are given based on an operability criteria platform for presenting ship seakeeping characteristics. Operability criteria considered in this paper are propeller emergence, deck wetness and bow acceleration of a product tanker. Limiting values of mentioned criteria determine sustainable speed. Heavy weather is described by extreme sea state of 7.5 m wave height. Wave spectrum used in this paper is Tabain spectrum which is developed specifically for Adriatic Sea. Seafarers approach of decisions making in extreme weather is also shown and servers as a guideline for further research of the authors.
