GMR Sensors in Automotive Applications

In this chapter, the various automotive applications for GMR based sensors are presented. The different applications have different requirements which are reflected in the individual sensor concept and features. The advantage of GMR based magnetic sensors over conventional silicon based Hall sensors is shown.

Speed Sensors for Automotive Applications Based on Integrated GMR Technology

Magnetic sensors are widely used in modern cars for example as wheel speed sensors for ABS or to determine crank shaft position in motor management systems. Increasing demand for larger air gaps and better noise performance (lower jitter) requires sensor principles with higher sensitivities compared to the currently used devices. The presented approach with the monolithic integration of GMR (Giant-Magneto-Resistors) sensing elements on top of the signal conditioning ASIC provides a smart, single chip sensor solution which combines superior performance with high reliability.

Die Elektrifizierung des Antriebsstranges ist eine Schlusseltechnologie zur Erreichung der zukunftigen Emissionsgrenzwerte. Auf Grund der hohen Anforderungen bezuglich Effizienz und Lebensdauer kommen dabei nahezu ausschlieslich burstenlose Motoren zum Einsatz. Bei der Regelung und Steuerung dieser Motoren kommt der hochgenauen und sicheren Erfassung der Rotorlage eine besondere Bedeutung zu. In diesem Kapitel werden Sensoren und Sensorkonzepte vorgestellt, die diese Anforderungen adressieren.

Hoch integrierte Strom- und Positionssensoren für elektrische Antriebssysteme

Durch den signifikanten Anstieg der Penetrationsrate von hoch elektrifizierten beziehungsweise rein elektrischen Fahrzeugantrieben steigen sowohl die Anforderungen an die Systemkosten, die Schlussel-Parameter und nicht zuletzt die funktionale Sicherheit elektrischer Antriebe. Dabei kommt der Sensorik eine besondere Bedeutung zu. Im Beitrag werden hoch performante magnetische Sensoren fur Rotorlage- und Stromsensorik vorgestellt, die neben den bekannten Unterscheidungskriterien auch noch wesentliche Vorteile bei der Systemintegration bieten.

Active Engine Management Sensors for Power Train Efficiency

“Clean performance”- the challenge with regard to improved driving performance and at the same time lower fuel consumption goes on. In addition to this lower exhaust limits are set by law. This bears the need for even more advanced engine management systems in future. These challenging targets result in higher requirements to engine management sensors with respect to accuracy, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and optimum operation with an increasing variety of applications. The development of a brand-new active engine management sensor generation based on giant magnetoresistance (GMR) has just been finished. The unique features of this new technology are high accuracy (repeatability), fast start-up calibration and high EMC robustness.
