Solar-grade Silicon

I. A. Schwirtlich; Günter Dr. Kurz; Martin Abels; Peter Woditsch

A new process for preparation of solar-grade silicon is presented. It is based on the reduction of silicontetrachloride with aluminium, performed as a gas-solid-reaction. It offers the possibility of continuous processing. The silicon is gained in grains with about one millimeter in diameter, depending on the aluminium used. The main advantage of the process is the low phosphorus and boron concentration of the silicon which fulfils the demands of photovoltaic application. Solar cells prepared by this material showed efficiencies up to 10,5%.
