COMPARISON OF VARIOUS TYPES OF APPROACHES TO THE MINEABILITY OF ROCK

Mineability of rock is one of the most important characteristics of rocks in the field of engineering geology and geotechnical engineering. Mineability of rock is the amount of work that we need to expend to breakage resistance of rock, handling and loading rocks at surface earthworks. This characteristic is quantified using degrees of excavation difficulty. There are various classification systems with different span of individual classes. This property is the basis for the assessment of the financial costs of earthworks and it is one of the most important qualities for the economy of construction works. The aim of this publication is to make comparisons these systems.

STUDIES DETERMINING THE AGGRESSIVENESS OF WATER IN GEOTECHNICAL PRACTICE

The aim of this publication is to study realization of aggressiveness of water in engineering geological and geotechnical practice. Determination of water aggressiveness is important for the knowledge of effect of concrete and steel. In the case that water is aggressive to concrete, located in the foundation structure, can be disturbed statics of the building or other malfunctions. Similar problems may occur in the case of steel elements. Moreover, various pipelines are steel pipes, which can be accelerated corrosion damaged. Determination of aggressiveness is thus one of the important goals engineering geological and geotechnical survey.

ANALYSIS OF MATERIAL COMPOSITION DUMPS IN THE OSTRAVA-KARVINA COAL DISTRICT

Knowledge material composition coal waste dump is a necessary condition of their subsequent utilizations. Knowledge this fact gives a first prerequisite for possible mining and processing materials of coal waste dumps and their possible use as secondary construction materials. Coal mine dumps are specific geological environment which in its volume is relatively homogeneous. Intensive mining in the Ostrava-Karvina coal district left behind a lot of coal waste dumps. Coal waste dumps composite entirely of gangue material are very numerous (around 46). Heap of Ostrava-Karvina coal district have a specific character resulting from hard coal mining in Upper Silesian Coal Basin. Knowledge of the composition and behaviour of the material from coal waste dumps allow you to select the most optimal utilization of affected areas. Although their number is gradually decreases it is still a large area, which needs to continue to study. The basis for understanding the material composition of these coal waste dumps, there is an analysis of the material and also a schematic cross section of Ostrava-Karvina coal district. The aim of this publication is to analyze the character material.

A case study assessing thermal activity at a significant geotourism locality of Ema coal tailing dumps in the mining landscape of Ostrava, Czech Republic

The study focuses on the assessment of surface area thermal activity measured by air thermal photography at the significant geotourism locality of Ema coal tailing dumps. Ema has become a geotourism post-mining landmark associated with black coal mining in Ostrava, the third largest city in the Czech Republic. At the same time, Ostrava is the largest industrial city in the Czech Republic. The study analyses a new approach to assess the surface area thermal activity in coal tailing dumps. A correct analysis of the surface area thermal activity is a fundamental requirement for projects to deal with the clean-up of a dump with thermal activity. Ema has a scientific and geotourism–educational character and it is important to plan solutions to achieve thermal activity stabilization. A 4 year monitoring programme was implemented using a new approach grounded in assessment based on thermal activity area classification (active and inactive), and comparison with a reference point in the dump with the highest temperature without thermal activity during the measurement period. It was this boundary condition that facilitated the correct assessment of the thermal activity surface area and it helped to establish gradual decreases in thermal activity from 0.29 ha (i.e. 0.79% of the total area of the dump) in 2011 to 0.15 ha (i.e. 0.41% of the total area of the dump) in 2014.

Analysis of The Loess Geological Environment in Terms of Engineering-Geological and Geotechnical Purposes and Application in Geotourism

Loess sediments, formed via wind action, are important geological environments both for the engineering geology as well as for the newly developing field in the geosciences, i.e. geotourism. The paper aims to give the basic characteristics of loess sediments and point at two localities in the Czech Republic, where significant archaeological localities are situated on loess. The first locality is Mikulcice in the Hodomn district in the South-Moravian Region. The second locality is Chtebuz in the Karvina district in the Moravian-Silesian Region. The two localities are important examples for tourists and scientists searching for the sights related to their geological environment. Loess sediments have specific characteristics that arise from their genesis.

Use of geological databases for geotechnical practice

The use of various geological databases is very important for construction practice. It brings a lot of important information that can be applied in geotechnical survey. We must remember that in the Czech Republic took place a number of different engineering geological surveys and research. Their results data are available in the final reports, which are centrally archived. Very convenient and economically preferred is to use the information obtained in previous works. It is possible only when we realize the research on the territory, in which has been in the past performed works. It is geological database boreholes, final reports, landslides and others.

ANALYSIS OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE COAL WASTE DUMP BODY IN THE OSTRAVA CITY

Coal waste dumps are very important and characteristic element of the landscape influenced by the deep coal mining. The aim of this publication is to provide an analysis of the sequence of temporal evolution of coal waste dump bodies in the Ostrava city. Knowledge of possibilities of these mine waste bodies is important for a wide range of human activities. Mine waste materials are valuable building materials, which are used mainly for embankment bodies to road communications, etc. Remnants of coal waste dumps, subsequently serves as foundation soil. Very important is the knowledge of the state of coal waste dump for land use planning. It is used to determine the concept of landscape elements in the landscape after mining.
