Constructing Time‐Scaled Maps: Switzerland from 1950 to 2000†

Kay W. Axhausen; Claudia Dolci; Philipp Fröhlich; Milena Scherer; Alessandro Carosio

Abstract The article discusses the construction of a time‐scaled maps series for Switzerland documenting the shrinking of the country since 1950. It describes underlying network models and the mathematical approach employed for the necessary rescaling. In conclusion, it presents the maps and discusses how the country was shrunk by half. † The article is based on earlier German‐language papers documenting this work by Carosio et al. (2005) and Fröhlich et al. (2005).

Entwicklung der Erreichbarkeit der Schweizer Gemeinden

Philipp Fröhlich; Martin Tschopp; Kay W. Axhausen

AbstractThe accessibility of the Swiss municipalities has changed substantially in the last 50 years due to the extension of the road network, improvements of the public transport and population growth. The paper deals with the first two variables and the resulting changes. The ratio of road-based to public transport-based accessibility has changed little over the time period from 1950 to 2000 in Switzerland.

Sustainability and air transport: Zurich airport case study

Philipp Fröhlich; Andreas Wittmer; Robert Weinert; Kay W. Axhausen

The research goal was to evaluate the environmental sustainability of Zurich Airport. The method used was to compare the environmental costs to the economic and social benefits generated by the airport. The analysis was completed on both the regional and global levels. The results show that Zurich Airport air transport generates more economic value than environmental and social costs.
