The Homology Thesis: Distinction Revisited

The theoretical model of The Distinction is a basic reference in the sociology of lifestyles (Bourdieu, 1979). This model is fundamentally structured by two concepts, structural homology and habitus. Habitus are cultural structures that exist in people’s bodies and minds and shape a wide variety of their behaviours, beliefs and thoughts. Structural homology is the assumption that social class structure is linked to the structure of aesthetic preferences through a one-to-one correspondence, an isomorphic relation. People’s tastes are seen as channelled by their position within the class structure, which is defined by the volume of capital and its “composition” and are organised in line with a “highbrow/lowbrow” opposition. Here, we will focus on the structural homology aspect and limit ourselves to analysing to what extent it is possible to univocally relate kinds of activities the French do with their social positions. We shall empirically examine the principles of organisation of the activities, just as they were described throughout a survey on cultural and sports practices of the French, and then evaluate to what extent a structural homology between practices and social positions is still observable.

Cultural Openness as an Emerging Form of Cultural Capital in Contemporary France

This article explores the changing pattern of cultural privilege in contemporary France. Using French data on cultural practices, including variables on ‘highbrow’ culture, mass culture and cosmopolitan culture, we apply a multi-correspondence analysis (MCA). The findings first show that cultural privilege among French social and educational elites remains primarily a matter of cultural capital endowment, with a structuring contrast between ‘legitimate’ and ‘mass’ culture. The MCA also shows an additional divide between local and global culture underpinned by a strong age gradient. Yet the emergence of a changing pattern of cultural privilege among the youngest cohorts does not imply any clear reduction in cultural inequalities. Rather, it suggests a growing cultural distinctiveness of French elites. Finally, these tendencies should not be easily extrapolated to other contexts as they reflect strong French specificities related to the evolution of social and educational structures during the second half of the 20th century.

Les mondes de l'art à l'épreuve du salariat : Le cas des musiciens de jazz français

Ahnlich wie in anderen Sektoren der lebenden Buhnenwelt, werden die franzosischen Jazzmusiker nach und nach seit Ende der sechziger Jahre in die Gesellschaft der Gehaltsempfanger integriert. Diese Integrierung verandert ihre Lebens- und Arbeitsbedingungen und vermindert die bis dahin ublichen Stereotypen. Man kann eine Gegenuberstellung machen von einerseits einem traditionellen Modell verbunden mit der Welt der Jazzclubs, in der die Musiker weitgehend der sozialen Kontrolle der artverwandten Gruppe unterstellt und zur Ubernahme einer Art « abweichenden Konformismus » gezwungen waren (Alkohol und Drogenverbrauch, Schwarzarbeit) und andererseits einem auftauchenden Modell, ausgezeichnet durch untypische Gehaltsempfanger, bei denen die Vielseitigkeit und Unsicherheit der Vertrage, gemildert durch die Arbeitslosenversicherung, die Autonomie der Musiker verstarkt und sie zur Diverzifizierung ihrer Aktivitaten anregt, besonders in Richtung Unterricht und Veranstaltungsbelebung. Verbundet mit dem Aufstieg einer Subventionswirtschaft mit Finanzhilfen fur gezielte Projekte und weniger aufgrund einer dauerhaften Unterstutzung von Produktions- und Verbreitungsstrukturen, fordert dieses Modell in ubrigen einen demographischen Aufstieg dieser Berufskategorie, der uber die Aufnahmefahigkeit des Arbeitsmarkts hinausgeht, wodurch wiederum bei weniger bekannten Musikern, dauerhafte Doppelaktivitaten uberleben. Insgesamt gesehen birgt dieses neue Modell das Risiko einer gewissen Banalisierung der Musikeraktivitaten durch die Integration einer Art Wirtschaftsform der « musikalischen Dienstleistung ».

Leisure and Cultural Consumption: The European Perspective

Leisure and cultural consumption are today considered key components in a persons – or a nations – quality of life. Despite the historic decline in the hours spent at paid labor, current trends in leisure time are unclear. Recent developments suggest a possible halt in the road toward the leisure society and a reversal of the leisure/status gradient. However, the sheer availability of leisure time is not the whole story. Scarcity in leisure time can be offset by a more intensive use of it.
