In the title mononuclear Schiff base complex, [Dy(NO3)3(C18H20N2O4)], the DyIII ion is ten-coordinated in a distorted hexadecahedral geometry by six O atoms of three nitrate anions and four O atoms of the Schiff base ligand. An intramolecular N—H⋯O hydrogen bond occurs. The crystal structure is stabilized by intermolecular C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds.

In the title heterodinuclear complex, [CuNa(C8H7O3)2(NO3)]n, the CuII ion is five-coordinated in a square-pyramidal arrangement by four atoms of two different ligand molecules in equatorial positions and one remote nitrate O atom in the apical position. The Na+ ion is eight-coordinated by four ligand O atoms and four nitrate O atoms. The ligand links the CuII and Na ions, forming a layered arrangement extending parallel to (001).

In the mononuclear salen-type complex, [Er(NO3)3(C18H20N2O4)], the ErIII ion is ten-coordinated in a distorted hexadecahedral geometry by six O atoms of three nitrate anions and four O atoms of the salen-like ligand. Intermolecular N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds occur. The crystal structure is stabilized by intermolecular C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds.

The study of polynuclear metal complexes has gained great recognition over the last decade owing to their fascinating topological structures, various properties, and potential applications as functional solid materials in luminescence, catalysis, and magnetic materials. A large number of heterodinuclear 3d–4f and 3d–3d′ complexes have been widely studied due to their functional applications. To our knowledge, structurally characterised heterodinuclear (3d–Na, 3d–K) and homodinuclear (Na–Na) metal complexes are rare. Three metal complexes, [CuIINaI(HL1)2(SbF6)]n (1), [CuIIKI(HL1)2(PF6)]n (2), and [Na2(H2L2)2] (3), were synthesised by two kinds of ligands, o-vanillin (HL1) and N,N′-ethylene-bis(3-methoxysalicylideneimine) (H2L2). The structures of heterodinuclear complexes 1 and 2 are both one-dimensional chain structures, including transition metal ions (CuII) and main group metal ions (NaI and KI). However, the complex 3, as a homodinuclear metal complex, only has one kind of centre, a NaI ion. The structures of complexes 1–3 were determined by single crystal X-ray crystallographic studies.

In the title heterodinuclear complex, [CuNa(BF4)(C8H7O3)2]n, the CuII ion is four-coordinated by four O atoms of two 2-formyl-6-methoxyphenolate ligands, giving rise to a square-planar geometry. The Na+ ion is six-coordinated by four O atoms from the two ligands and two F atoms of two tetrafluoridoborate anions. The tetrafluoridoborate anion links the Na+ ions, forming a one-dimensional structure along [001]. Three F atoms of the tetrafluoridoborate anion are disordered over two sets of sites, with an occupancy ratio of 0.790 (11):0.210 (11).

In the dinuclear salen-type title complex, [CuNa(BF4)(C18H18N2O4)(CH3OH)], the CuII atom is chelated by two O atoms and two N atoms of the deprotonated Schiff base in a square-planar geometry. The Na atom is seven-coordinate as it is linked to four O atoms of the same Schiff base ligand, one O atom of the methanol and two tetrafluoridoborate F atoms. The remaining two F atoms of the anion are disordered over two sites in a 0.598 (18):0.402 (18) ratio.
