Nível de atividade física e sua relação com quedas acidentais e fatores psicossociais em idosos de centro de convivência

Priscila Carneiro Valim-Rogatto; Cecília Candolo; Ana Cristina Passarella Brêtas

This cross-sectional study aimed to estimate the level of physical activity (LPA) in Senior Citizen Centers (SCC) users and the possible association with accidental falls and other related variables. The sample included 291 senior citizens from three different SCC from Cuiaba City (Mato Grosso State, Brazil) who answered the Mini-mental State Examination-MMSE and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-IPAQ. Descriptive Statistic and Ordinal Logistic Regression by Proportional Odds Model (POM) were used for data analyses (p<0.05). About 40% of the elderly suffered falls in the last year. Analyzing the LPA, 38.1% of voluntaries were classified as high level, 49.8% as moderate level and 12.1% as low level. The results of POM indicated that the oldest group showed lower chance to be classified as high LPA (OR=0.78: IC=0.96-2.92) than younger groups. These results were observed in seniors that do not have a job (OR=0.38: IC=0.22-0.67) and those with low cognitive status (OR=0.31; IC=0.31-0.38). Accidental falls occurrence did not show association with LPA.

Luciana Botelho Ribeiro; Gustavo Puggina Rogatto; Afonso Antonio Machado; Priscila Carneiro Valim-Rogatto

Objective: To investigate factors that interfere on adherence of elderly to physical activity programs and reasons of dropping out of this kind of activity. Methods: To conduct the systematic review, the SciELO, LILACS, MEDLINE/PubMed and Cochrane databases were used, with search being conducted in years 2011 and 2012, using key-words in Portuguese:‘exercicio fisico’, ‘idoso’, ‘adesao’ and ‘desistencia’; and in English: ‘physical exercise’,‘elderly’, ‘adherence’ and ‘dropout’. Articles available in full text version and published between 2000 and 2012 were included, reaching 17 articles, 13 of them having met the inclusion criteria. Results: Of the 13 articles, 7 were found in MEDLINE; 6, in LILACS; 3, in SciELO; and 1, in PubMed. Regarding the study design, 8 were characterized as crosssectional studies; 3 were experimental studies; 1 was a cohort study and 1 was a case study. Conclusion: It was observed that there are several reasons that induce adherence, the main ones being related to physical activity itself and the improvement of health. As the major reasons for dropout are the health problems, lack of time, poor financial condition, the distance from places were activities are performed, absence of a partner, among others. doi:http://dx.doi.org/10.5020/18061230.2013.p58

This quali-quantitative study aimed to verify subjective exercise experiences of older women before and after exercise sessions in actual and virtual conditions, as well as, the preferred exercise condition. The sample was composed by 20 older women (71.1±6.5 years-old) who practiced dance sessions in actual and virtual conditions, and answered the Subjective Exercise Experiences Scale (SEES) before and after the activity. In virtual condition it was used the virtual game Just Dance I from the Nintendo Wii® console. In actual condition participants reproduced the same game movements, as demonstrated by the researcher. Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests were used for data analyses (p<0.05). Significant decrease was observed in the psychological distress score of SEES after both conditions. Increase in positive well being score was found only in the virtual condition. Most of the older women chose the actual condition as the preferred.

Interference of Stretching Exercise and Music on Stress Symptoms of Brazilian Pre-university Students

Priscila Carneiro Valim-Rogatto; Gustavo Puggina Rogatto

2405 Pre-university period is a stressful moment for Brazilian students, since they are submitted to eliminatory exams to be admitted at public and private universities. According to previous studies this condition generates increase of the number of stress symptoms that can contribute to physical and psychological disorders, such as anxiety, depression, diarrhea, sleep disturbance and muscle tension. Acute exercise decreases behavioral and physiological manifestations of the stress response. Stretching exercise can be used to treat stressed patients since it can produce relief factors. Music is also used as a therapeutic tool to treat some diseases. PURPOSE: to verify the acute effects of stretching exercise and music listening on the number of stress symptoms of pre-university Brazilian students. METHODS: Two hundred and fifty students of preparatory courses for university admission exams were separated into four experimental groups: control (C), stretching exercise without music (S), music listening (M), and stretching exercise with music (SM). The participants of S and SM groups performed active stretching exercise sessions. The participants of M and SM groups listened the same “New Age” music sequence. The total time of each
