Second harmonic generation by self-focusing of intense hollow Gaussian laser beam in collisionless plasma

Gunjan Purohit; Priyanka Rawat; Rakhi Gauniyal

The effect of self focused hollow Gaussian laser beam (HGLB) (carrying null intensity in center) on the excitation of electron plasma wave (EPW) and second harmonic generation (SHG) has been investigated in collisionless plasma, where relativistic-ponderomotive and only relativistic nonlinearities are operative. The relativistic change of electron mass and the modification of the background electron density due to ponderomotive nonlinearity lead to self-focusing of HGLB in plasma. Paraxial ray theory has been used to derive coupled equations for the self focusing of HGLB in plasma, generation of EPW, and second harmonic. These coupled equations are solved analytically and numerically to study the laser intensity in the plasma, electric field associated with the excited EPW, and the power of SHG. Second harmonic emission is generated due to nonlinear coupling between incident HGLB and EPW satisfying the proper phase matching conditions. The results show that the effect of including the ponderomotive nonlinearity is significant on the generation of EPW and second harmonic. The electric field associated with EPW and the power of SHG are found to be highly sensitive to the order of the hollow Gaussian beam.

This paper explores the self-focusing of hollow Gaussian laser beam (HGLB) in collisionless magnetized plasma and its effect on the generation of THz radiation in the presence of relativistic-ponderomotive nonlinearity. The relativistic change of electron mass and electron density perturbation due to the ponderomotive force leads to self-focusing of the laser beam in plasma. Nonlinear coupling between the intense HGLB and electron plasma wave leads to generation of THz radiation in plasma. Resonant excitation of THz radiation at different frequencies of laser and electron plasma wave satisfies proper phase matching conditions. Appropriate expressions for the beam width parameter of the laser beam and the electric vector of the THz wave have been evaluated under the paraxial-ray and Wentzel-Kramers Brillouin approximations. It is found that the yield of THz amplitude depends on the focusing behaviour of laser beam, magnetic field, and background electron density. Numerical simulations have been carried out to investigate the effect of laser and plasma parameters on self-focusing of the laser beam and further its effect on the efficiency of the generated THz radiation. This paper explores the self-focusing of hollow Gaussian laser beam (HGLB) in collisionless magnetized plasma and its effect on the generation of THz radiation in the presence of relativistic-ponderomotive nonlinearity. Growth of ring ripple in a collisionless plasma in relativistic-ponderomotive regime and its effect on stimulated Raman backscattering process

Priyanka Rawat; Rakhi Gauniyal; Gunjan Purohit

A theoretical and numerical study has been made of the propagation of a ring rippled laser beam in collisionless plasma with dominant relativistic ponderomotive nonlinearity and its effect on the excitation of electron plasma wave and stimulated Raman backscattering process. The growth of ring ripple, riding on an intense Gaussian laser beam in plasma has also been studied. A paraxial-ray and WKB approximation has been invoked to understand the nature of propagation of the ring rippled Gaussian laser beam in plasma, electron plasma wave and back reflectivity under the influence of both nonlinearities. The growth rate and focusing of a ring rippled beam is found to be considerably affected by the power of the main beam and the phase angle between the electric vectors of the main beam and the ring ripple. It has also been observed that the focusing is released by the coupling of relativistic and ponderomotive nonlinearities, which significantly affected the dynamics of the excitation of electron plasma wave...

Propagation of two intense cosh-Gaussian laser beams in plasma in the relativistic-ponderomotive regime

Gunjan Purohit; Bineet Gaur; Priyanka Rawat

This work presents an investigation of the propagation of two intense cosh-Gaussian laser beams (CGLBs) in collisionless plasma taking into account the combined effects of relativistic and ponderomotive nonlinearities. Due to mutual interaction of two CGLBs, the self-focusing of one beam is affected by the presence of another beam in plasma, and cross-focusing takes place. A paraxial-like approach has been used to investigate the cross-focusing of CGLBs in plasma. An appropriate expression for the nonlinear dielectric constant of plasma has been evaluated in the presence of relativistic-ponderomotive force and used to study the propagation of CGLBs in plasma. The effect of various well-established laser and plasma parameters on the cross-focusing of two beams in plasma has been explored and the results are compared with only relativistic nonlinearity and the Gaussian profile of laser beams. Numerical results show that the decentered parameter (b) plays a crucial role in the cross-focusing of the CGLBs. It is observed that CGLBs focused earlier than Gaussian beams. This study is useful in beat wave excitation of electron plasma wave and collective laser particle accelerators.

Stimulated Brillouin backscattering of a ring-rippled laser beam in collisionless plasma

Gunjan Purohit; Priyanka Rawat

The effect of the propagation of a ring-rippled laser beam in the presence of relativistic and ponderomotive non-linearities on the excitation of ion-acoustic wave (IAW) and resulting stimulated Brillouin backscattering in collisionless plasma at relativistic powers is studied. To understand the nature of propagation of the ring ripple-like instability, a paraxial-ray approach has been invoked in which all the relevant parameters correspond to a narrow range around the irradiance maximum of the ring ripple. Modified coupled equations for growth of ring ripple in the plasma, generations of IAW and back-stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) are derived from fluid equations. These coupled equations are solved analytically and numerically to study the intensity of ring-rippled laser beam and excited IAW as well as back reflectivity of SBS in the plasma for various established laser and plasma parameters. It is found that the back reflectivity of SBS is enhanced due to the strong coupling between ring-rippled laser beam and the excited IAW. The results also show that the back reflectivity of SBS reduce for higher intensity of the laser beam.

This paper presents an investigation of self-focusing of intense Gaussian rippled laser beam in collisionless plasma by including the nonlinearity associated with the relativistic mass and the ponderomotive force and its effects on the excitation of ion acoustic wave. The growth of ripple, riding on an intense Gaussian laser beam in plasma and its coupling with ion acoustic wave has also been studied. Modified coupled equations for main laser beam, growth of laser ripple in plasma, rippled laser beam, beam width, and density perturbation associated with ion acoustic wave are derived using Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin and paraxial ray approximation. These coupled equations are solved analytically and numerically to study the laser intensity in plasma and the variation of amplitude of the ion acoustic wave for various established laser and plasma parameters. From numerical computation, it is observed that both nonlinearities significantly affected the dynamics of the growth of laser ripple in plasma, propagation of rippled laser beam as well as ion acoustic wave in plasma at high laser power flux. The growth of laser ripple increase with increase in the intensity of laser beam and due to the contribution of growth rate, intensity profile of rippled laser beam and ion acoustic wave modified accordingly.

Higher-order paraxial theory of the propagation of ring rippled laser beam in plasma: Relativistic ponderomotive regime

Gunjan Purohit; Priyanka Rawat; Prashant Chauhan; Saleh T. Mahmoud

This article presents higher-order paraxial theory (non-paraxial theory) for the ring ripple formation on an intense Gaussian laser beam and its propagation in plasma, taking into account the relativistic-ponderomotive nonlinearity. The intensity dependent dielectric constant of the plasma has been determined for the main laser beam and ring ripple superimposed on the main laser beam. The dielectric constant of the plasma is modified due to the contribution of the electric field vector of ring ripple. Nonlinear differential equations have been formulated to examine the growth of ring ripple in plasma, self focusing of main laser beam, and ring rippled laser beam in plasma using higher-order paraxial theory. These equations have been solved numerically for different laser intensities and plasma frequencies. The well established experimental laser and plasma parameters are used in numerical calculation. It is observed that the focusing of the laser beams (main and ring rippled) becomes fast in the nonparaxi...
