Triton-proton elastic scattering and spin-dependent nucleon-nucleon forces☆

R. F. Haglund; Ronald E. Brown; Nelson Jarmie; Gerald G. Ohlsen; P.A. Schmelzbach; D. Fick

Abstract Angular distributions of the differential cross section and analyzing power At have been measured for 1H( t , t)1H scattering at center-of-mass energies Ec.m. = 1.26, 1.68, 2.19, 2.70, 3.21 and 3.71 MeV. At the highest energies, large differences are observed between At and the analyzing powers Ap for 3H( p , p)3H scattering. It is shown that the experimental results can yield detailed information on the odd-l spin-orbit and odd-l tensor nucleon-nucleon forces.

Analyzing powers Ay for reactions leading to several members of the mass-six supermultiplet have been measured via the t+9Be → 6Li + 6He, 6Li∗ + 6He reactions at 17 MeV triton energy. In contrast to the previously measured differential cross sections, which show symmetry about 90° for both the S = 1 and S = 0 channels, Ay is consistent with being antisymmetric about 90° for the S = 0 channel and is approximately symmetric for the S = 1 channel. An antisymmetric result for the S = 0 isospin-multiplet channel could be understood by invoking isospin symmetry, in analogy to the well-known Barshay-Temmer theorem. The reaction leading to the S = 1 channel is discussed in terms of a direct reaction mechanism; however, the symmetry of Ay about 90° is not understood.
