Summary The fatty acid composition of the total cellular lipids of 25 strains of streptobacteria isolated from vacuum packaged meats was determined. On the basis of their tetradecenoic ( n -C 14:1 ) and tetradecanoic ( n -C 14:0 ) contents, two separate clusters of organisms, corresponding precisely to those identified in an earlier numerical taxonomic study, were apparent. The cluster with the lower content of these two acids identified closely with named strains of streptobacteria from various sources. The second cluster was quite clearly different and could be further subdivided on the presence/absence of cyclopropane fatty acids.
