Laser has been widely employed in health specialties, and its application in Dentistry is currently being evolved to benefit the patient with atraumatic and painless treatments, with better post-operative recovery, besides other advantages. Orthodontics may also be benefited from the utilization of laser, even though its application and effects are not well known by professionals. The aim of the present work is to present a literature review to provide orthodontists with information on how they may apply this energy to improve the quality of their work and the conditions for treatment, both for the professional and the patient.

AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the skeletal and dentoalveolar effects of the Class II malocclusion treatment with the Jasper Jumper appliance associated with fixed orthodontic appliances, compared to an untreated control group. METHODS: The sample comprised 47 subjects, divided into two groups: Group 1, with 25 patients at a mean age of 12.72 years, treated with the Jasper Jumper appliance for a mean period of 2.15 years; Group 2 (Control), including 22 subjects at a mean age of 12.67 years, who were not submitted to orthodontic treatment and presenting Class II malocclusion, observed by a mean period of 2.12 years. It was evaluated the cephalograms before and after orthodontic treatment for Group 1 and observational period for Group 2. Initial and final cephalometric variables and changes with treatment were compared between the groups by independent t tests. RESULTS: When compared to the control group, the Jasper Jumper group presented greater restriction of anterior displacement of the maxilla and a greater maxillary retrusion, improvement of maxillomandibular relationship, reduction of facial convexity, greater protrusion and intrusion of mandibular incisors and a greater extrusion of mandibular molars, besides a greater reduction of overjet and overbite and improvement of molar relationship. CONCLUSION: The correction of the Class II in the group treated with the Jasper Jumper and fixed appliances was mainly due to restriction of maxillary growth, protrusion and intrusion of mandibular incisors and extrusion of mandibular molars.

AIM: This study conducted a cephalometric evaluation in young individuals with Class II division 1 malocclusion treated with IHG (Interlandi headgear). MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 100 lateral cephalograms of 50 young individuals were analyzed, which were divided into two groups with 25 individuals each. The individuals in the experimental group, with an average age of 10.51 years at the beginning of treatment, was followed for 1.32 years. The subjects in the other group were kept as controls, with an average age of 10.06 years at the beginning of treatment and followed for a period of 1.35 years. RESULTS: The interception of the Class II division 1 malocclusion in the study group was significant. The anterior maxillary displacement was significantly restricted in the study group compared to the control one. The maxillomandibular relationship was significantly improved, distal movement of the maxillary molars was significant and the upper lip presented a statistically significant retrusion as compared to the treated group. CONCLUSION: This treatment protocol provided relevant clinical alternations for correction of the Class II division 1 malocclusion.

INTRODUCTION Skeletal, dental and profile discrepancies can be amended by using functional orthodontic appliances. OBJECTIVE This study is a report of the treatment of a patient, 11 years and 4 months old, with Class II, division 1, malocclusion, convex profile, protrusion of upper incisors, pronounced overjet and overbite, and mild crowding. METHODS The patient was treated with a Jasper Jumper associated to fixed appliances for 6 months and Class II intermaxillary elastics (3/16-in) during the last 4 months. After debonding, a Hawley retainer was used during daytime and a modified Bionator for night use during one year. In the lower dental arch a bonded lingual retainer was used. This treatment combination improved the profile, as well as the overjet, overbite and molar relation. RESULTS There was clockwise mandibular rotation and increase of lower anterior facial height. The lower incisors were protruded and extruded and the lower molars were extruded. The centric occlusal relation was checked and it was coincident to the maximum usual intercuspation. CONCLUSIONS It was demonstrated that the Jasper Jumper is an efficient alternative to Class II malocclusion treatment, providing improvement in the facial profile, although the changes are more dentoalveolar than skeletal.

This article describes interdisciplinary treatment conducted in adult patients, 49-year-old, with periodontal problems, losses and dental inclination, occlusal trauma, localized bone loss, and necessity of rehabilitation with dental implants. Alignment and leveling of the teeth, the molars uprighting with cantilever, and space closure were performed the treatment was facilitated by periodic periodontal control. The resultant occlusion was stable throughout a 5-year retention period. In conclusion, interdisciplinary treatment combined with periodontics, orthodontics, implantodontist, and restorative dentistry was useful for improving the patient′s oral health, function, and esthetics.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the standards of facial height in 30 young (14-year-old) Japanese-Brazilian descendants with normal occlusion, and assess whether sexual dimorphism is evident. METHODS: The cephalometric measurements used followed the analyses by Wylie-Johnson, Siriwat-Jarabak, Gebeck, Merrifield and Horn. RESULTS: Results showed dimorphism for total anterior facial height (TAFH), lower anterior facial height (LAFH), anterior facial height (AFH), total posterior facial height (TPFH) and upper posterior facial height (UPFH) measurements. CONCLUSIONS: The standards of facial heights in young Japanese-Brazilian descendants with normal occlusion were observed. Sexual dimorphism was identified in five out of thirteen evaluated variables at this age range.
