Analytical study on the effect of dimension and position of slot for the designing of ultra wide band (UWB) microstrip antenna

Ranjan Mishra; Raj Gaurav Mishra; Piyush Kuchhal

This research paper presents a simple design consideration of Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) Microstrip antenna using a centrally loaded rectangular slot. An analytical study of the effects of different size and shapes of slots on the performance characteristic of UWB Microstrip antenna is presented. Insertion of slot and the changes in dimension of ground plane has a high impact on the behavior and parameter of the patch antenna. To improve the bandwidth of the patch antenna, proper insertion of slot on the planer patch structure has been used. In the paper 12mm by 15.6 mm rectangular patch antenna carved on FR4 substrate is presented. Both the simulated and the measured result show the operation of the antenna in the entire UWB range. This parametric study would be of a great interest in the designing of compact antennas for wireless communications operating in UWB.

Design of Broadband Monopole Microstrip Antenna Using Rectangular Slot

Raj Gaurav Mishra; Ranjan Mishra; Piyush Kuchhal

Microstrip antenna suffers from narrow bandwidth. The bandwidth would be enhanced by use of slot. Different sizes and shapes of slots on the patch are of great interest for obtaining optimum results in antenna design. A suitable dimension of the patch along with the position and dimension of the slot is critical in the broadening effect of the antenna. Present study proposed the method of a broadband microstrip patch antenna using slot. The slot used on the patch’s surface affects the radiation characteristics of microstrip patch antenna. This study also presents the choice of size and position of the slot for the broadband antenna. The simulations are conducted using HFSS and ADS, and results of the simulation studies are discussed in this paper.

Optimization of the dimension of circular slotted rectangular Microstrip antenna for wide band wireless applications

Ranjan Mishra; Raj Gaurav Mishra; Piyush Kuchhal; R. K. Chaurasia

A stupendous growth in the area of Information technology is the spread of wireless wide band applications. The versatility of Microstrip patch antennas added new dimension to it. Its light weight and suitability for integration with microwave integrated circuits along with the simplicity of the structures marks it well suitable for low-cost manufacturing. All these accounts for the wide spread use of microstrip patch antennas in various wireless communication applications. In this paper a wide band rectangular shaped single-patch microstrip patch antenna with circular slot is proposed. Circular shaped slot over the rectangular patch is combined together to expand the bandwidth of the antenna. A compact size of 19 mm by 23 mm with duroid material is chosen for design. Optimization using HFSS simulation software is applied to optimize the structure of the antenna. The effect of circular slot is compared without the slot structure. It is observed that the bandwidth expands up to 0.7 GHz with a uniform radiation pattern.

Broadband Stacked Microstrip Antenna with Genetically Designed Patches

Raj Gaurav Mishra; Jeevani Jayasinghe

This paper presents the broadband performance and broadside radiation of a stacked microstrip antenna design. This antenna consists of two substrates stacked one over the other incorporating an air gap in between. The substrates have ϵ r = 4.4 (dielectric constant) and h = 1.58 mm (height). One patch of the antenna has been designed to resonate at a frequency of 5 GHz. Genetic algorithms (GA) have been used to select the dimensions of the other patch in order to have broadband performance. Moreover, two slots have been cut on patches to improve performance further. The dimensions and the positions of the slots, the position of the feed, and the size of the air gap have also been optimized by using GA. The novelty of this antenna design is synchronized GA-based optimization of useful parameters. This optimized design has a −10 dB bandwidth of 3.4 GHz and broadside radiation with gain about 5 dB throughout the bandwidth. Its performance has been compared with stacked microstrip antennas that have not been optimized.

Raj Gaurav Mishra; Ranjan Mishra; Piyush Kuchhal; N. Kumari

This paper depicts the effect on the resonant frequency and impedance bandwidth of a rectangular microstrip antenna. It is one of the simple ways for the effective improvement of the bandwidth of the microstrip antenna. The method uses the insertion of notches and slits on the planer radiating surface of the antenna structure. The microstrip antennas structure has configured on FR4 epoxy substrate. The configurations are simulated and analyzed using ADS software. The antenna parameters, in terms of bandwidth, gain, and directivity, are studied for the analysis. The antenna enhanced the bandwidth up to 37% with a good return loss of −33 dB. This study would be helpful in the designing of compact microstrip antennas with enhanced bandwidth for various purposes in the field of wireless communications in general and various earth science applications in particular at super high microwave frequency.

Effect of the Dimension of Feedline for the Enhancement of Bandwidth of Square Microstrip Antenna

Rachna Chaurasia; Vishal Mathur; Ranjan Mishra; Raj Gaurav Mishra

The need for the development of wideband microstrip antenna has been very well recognized. The present-day researchers are focused on developing novel design of microstrip antenna which would provide a good wideband. In this paper, the geometry of a microstrip antenna has taken to be square and feeding method also changed which is responsible for broadband. The antenna is fed with microstrip line by keeping a stub at source junction. It is done to improve the impendence bandwidth by the width of the structure of feedline adjustment is performed. This paper presents the study of a compact square antenna to operate in the frequency range of X-band from 8 to 12 GHz. The prototype planer antenna exhibits an overall wideband of bandwidth 560 MHz with a good reflection coefficient of −25 dB. This type of antenna is very useful in many broadband applications in X-band.

Raj Gaurav Mishra; Jeevani Jayasinghe; G. Chathuranga; Ranjan Mishra

Microstrip antennas contain one dielectric substrate in its basic form. Properties of the substrate play a vital role in design of microstrip antennas. Therefore, understanding the impact of the substrate is important to the antenna research community. This paper analyzes the relationship between substrate properties and patch dimensions by designing numerous rectangular-shaped microstrip antennas working at different resonant frequencies.

Choice of Right Dimension and Position of Microstrip Feedline for the Bandwidth Improvement of Microstrip Antenna

Ranjan Mishra; Raj Gaurav Mishra; Piyush Kuchhal; Piyush Dua

Microstrip antenna has huge potential to meet the ongoing demand for wireless communication. Low conventional bandwidth of it hinders its use. Out of many ways of increasing the bandwidth, one of the simplest ways is the proper dimension and position of the feedline. A proper value has insightful effect in bandwidth enhancement by proper impedance matching. This chapter put some insight into it for a particular rectangular antenna at X band. The simulations are conducted using HFSS. A considerable improvement by this simple way has been noticed.

This paper presents the solution of dynamic load dispatching problem using particle swarm optimization (PSO) evolutionary technique. The PSO is used for minimizing the cost with subject to constraints such as capacity of generation and analyses the two different cases on IEEE 30 bus, 6-generator data. It found that the proposed method is capable to provide feasible results for the generating power.
