Lexical choice of modal expressions

This paper describes a model of the choice of modal verbs and modal particles. The choice mechanism does not require a modality-specific input as, e.g., a modal logical formula. Instead semantic (modal force) and pragmatic constraints (speech act marking) are applied to the available information on the whole and constrain the set of modal candidates to those that are appropriate in the respective contexts. The choice model is realized in the CAN system that generates recommendations about courses of study.

A Strategic Reasoning Model for Generating Alternative Answers

We characterize a class of indirect answers to yes/no questions, alternative answers, where information is given that is not directly asked about, but which might nonetheless address the underlying motivation for the question. We develop a model rooted in game theory that generates these answers via strategic reasoning about possible unobserved domain-level user requirements. We implement the model within an interactive question answering system simulating real estate dialogue. The system learns a prior probability distribution over possible user requirements by analyzing training dialogues, which it uses to make strategic decisions about answer selection. The system generates pragmatically natural and interpretable answers which make for more efficient interactions compared to a baseline.

Towards a Game-Theoretic Approach to Content Determination

This paper argues for a game-theoretic approach to content determination that uses text-type specific strategies in order to determine the optimal content for various user types. By means of content determination for the description of numerical data the benefits of a game-theoretic treatment of content determination are outlined.

Pragmatic question answering: A game-theoretic approach

Abstract We present results of quantitative evaluations of a content selection scheme for answer generation in sales dialogue which is based on an interactive game-theoretic model of the dialogue scenario. The model involves representing a probability distribution over possible customer requirements, i.e., needs that must be met before a customer will agree to buy an object. Through game-theoretic analysis we derive a content selection procedure which constitutes an optimal strategy in the dialogue game. This procedure is capable of producing pragmatically appropriate indirect answers to yes/no questions, and is implemented in an online question answering system. Evaluation results show that these answers are pragmatically natural and contribute to dialogue efficiency. The model allows for systems that learn probabilities of customer requirements, both online and from previous data.

Die Sprachwissenschaft, auch Linguistik genannt, ist die Wissenschaft, die Sprachen wie Deutsch, Spanisch, Mandarin usw. beschreibt und analysiert und die Zusammenhange zwischen Sprache und Gehirn, Sprache und Kultur sowie Sprache und Gesellschaft klaren will. Sie will herausfinden, wie sprachliche Einheiten (Laute, Satze, Auserungen usw.) aufgebaut sind, welche Prinzipien diesen Aufbau steuern, und wie Menschen in unterschiedlichen Situationen mithilfe ihrer Sprache mehr oder weniger erfolgreich kommunizieren.

Semantik – die Bedeutung von Wörtern und Sätzen

Die Semantik ist das Teilgebiet der Linguistik, das sich mit den Bedeutungen naturlichsprachlicher Ausdrucke befasst. Allerdings ist nicht jedes Bedeutungsphanomen auch ein semantisches Phanomen. Bestimmte Bedeutungen werden in der Pragmatik, einem weiteren Teilgebiet der Linguistik, analysiert, sodass wir nach einer Klarung der Frage, was Bedeutungen grundsatzlich sind, die Beziehungen und Abgrenzungen zwischen der Semantik und der Pragmatik behandeln werden.

Die Pragmatik beschaftigt sich mit dem Sprachgebrauch in Kommunikationssituationen – dem kommunikativen Sinn, wie wir ihn in Kapitel 5 genannt haben. Diese grobe Charakterisierung grenzt die Pragmatik von der Semantik ab, die sich ja mit der Bedeutung von Wortern und Satzen an sich auseinandersetzt, die Kommunikationssituation also auser Acht lasst.

Zur Geschichte der Sprachwissenschaft – Wegbereiter und Koryphäen der modernen Linguistik

Das Nachdenken uber die Sprachfahigkeit des Menschen ist wahrscheinlich so alt wie die Menschheit selbst. In fast allen Religionen finden sich Behauptungen, wie der Mensch zur Sprache gekommen ist und warum anscheinend nur er diese Fahigkeit besitzt, mit seiner Sprache auf komplexe Weise zu kommunizieren. Aber nicht nur die mundlich weitergegebenen oder schriftlich fixierten religiosen Annahmen zur Entstehung der Sprache sind alt, auch wissenschaftliche Uberlegungen zum Satzbau und zur Bedeutung existieren im europaischen Raum seit uber 2400 Jahren. Viele dieser Arbeiten sind in Vergessenheit geraten, etliche sind zwar immer noch bekannt, spielen aber in der heutigen Linguistik entweder nur eine untergeordnete Rolle, oder sie sind uberholt.

Pragmatic Query Answering: Results from a Quantitative Evaluation

This paper reports on an implementation of methods for generating indirect responses in question-answering dialogue based on domain-level strategic reasoning. User’s questions are interpreted as reflexes of underlying user requirements which are potentially satisfied by information beyond what is directly asked about. We find that the algorithms that reason about user requirements yield significantly shorter dialogues than a simpler baseline, and that users are able to interact with these systems in a pragmatically natural way.

Abduction in games for a flexible approach to discourse planning

We propose a new approach to document planning for natural language generation that considers this process as strategic interaction between the generation component and a user model. The core task of the user model is abductive reasoning about the usefulness of rhetorical relations for the document plan with respect to the users information requirements. Since the different preferences of the generation component and the user model are defined by parametrised utility functions, we achieve a highly flexible approach to the generation of document plans for different users. We apply this approach to the generation of reports on performance data. The questionnaire-based evaluation we accomplished so far corroborates the assumptions made in the model.
