Multilingual Verbmobil-Dialogs: Experiments, Data Collection and Data Analysis

In this article we describe the collection and analysis of multilingual dialogs with a human or machine interpreter within the Verbmobil framework. As the dialogs represent very rare speech data with high acoustic quality, analysis is still in progress and further research is ongoing.

Dialogue interpreting : data and analysis

Up to the development of the VERBMOBIL-prototype mainly two types of speech data within the domain of appointment scheduling are recorded: 1. German-German dialogues serving as test and training data, 2. Wizard-of-Oz-dialogues and some authentic German-English and German-Japanese dialogues with human interpreter. Most of the dialogues of type 2 are recorded by the VERBMOBIL Subproject 13 in Hamburg and are stored in a special database (DiaBoLiC, Dialogue Interpreting: Analysis Base of Linguistic Corpora). In this paper, we describe characteristic features of the data of type 2, existing analysis and the structure of DiaBoLic, and we present new results of data analysis (extension of the list of dialogue acts for the domain TRAVEL PLANNING, analysis of translation strategies) . As dialogues of type 2 are regarded as relevant for the VERBMOBIL application, the data have been analyzed with reference to key-words in the realization of dialogue acts ([2]). A list of key-words for dialogue acts as well as a list of tested scenarios is attached to this paper.

Computerlinguistik – Was ist das?

Die Computerlinguistik ist das Fachgebiet, das sich mit der maschinellen Verarbeitung naturlicher Sprache beschaftigt. Sie ist im Uberschneidungsbereich von Informatik und Linguistik angesiedelt, aber die Wurzeln der Computerlinguistik reichen bis in die funfziger Jahre zuruck. In diesem halben Jahrhundert seit ihrem Entstehen hat sie sich mittlerweile national und international erfolgreich etabliert, so dass auf dem Wissen aus der Informatik und der Linguistik aufbauend neue und eigenstandige Methoden fur die maschinelle Verarbeitung gesprochener und geschriebener Sprache entwickelt wurden.

Evaluation von sprachverstehenden und -generierenden Systemen

In diesem Kapitel wird aufgezeigt, wie die Evaluation sprachverarbeitender Systeme gestaltet werden kann. Dazu werden zunachst grundlegende Begriffe eingefuhrt (Unterkapitel 6.1), die verschiedenen Grunde fur eine Evaluation dargelegt (Abschnitt 6.1.1) und daraus das weitere Vorgehen abgeleitet. Anschliesend werden die Evaluationsmethoden (Abschnitt 6.1.2) und Qualitatsmerkmale (Abschnitt 6.1.3) vorgestellt. Die eingefuhrten Begriffe und Konzepte zur Evaluation werden am Beispiel der Evaluation von Systemen mit unterschiedlichen zentralen Funktionen (Spracherkennung, Dialogsysteme, Sprachsynthese und Maschinelle Ubersetzung, vgl. Unterkapitel 6.2) aufgezeigt.
