The study of the resonant behavior of silicon nanostructures provides a new route for achieving efficient control of both electric and magnetic components of light. We demonstrate experimentally and numerically that enhancement of localized electric and magnetic fields can be achieved in a silicon nanodimer. For the first time, we experimentally observe hotspots of the magnetic field at visible wavelengths for light polarized across the nanodimers primary axis, using near-field scanning optical microscopy.

Nanowire Antenna Emission

We experimentally demonstrate the directional emission of polarized light from single semiconductor nanowires. The directionality of this emission has been directly determined with Fourier microphotoluminescence measurements of vertically oriented InP nanowires. Nanowires behave as efficient optical nanoantennas, with emission characteristics that are not only given by the material but also by their geometry and dimensions. By means of finite element simulations, we show that the radiated power can be enhanced for frequencies and diameters at which leaky modes in the structure are present. These leaky modes can be associated to Mie resonances in the cylindrical structure. The radiated power can be also inhibited at other frequencies or when the coupling of the emission to the resonances is not favored. We anticipate the relevance of these results for the development of nanowire photon sources with optimized efficiency and/or controlled emission by the geometry.

Polarization is a key property defining the state of light. It was discovered by Brewster, while studying light reflected from materials at different angles. This led to the first polarizers, based on Brewsters effect. Now, one of the trends in photonics is the study of miniaturized devices exhibiting similar, or improved, functionalities compared with bulk optical elements. In this work, it is theoretically predicted that a properly designed all-dielectric metasurface exhibits a generalized Brewsters effect potentially for any angle, wavelength and polarization of choice. The effect is experimentally demonstrated for an array of silicon nanodisks at visible wavelengths. The underlying physics is related to the suppressed scattering at certain angles due to the interference between the electric and magnetic dipole resonances excited in the nanoparticles. These findings open doors for Brewster phenomenon to new applications in photonics, which are not bonded to a specific polarization or angle of incidence.

Metallo-dielectric core-shell nanospheres as building blocks for optical three-dimensional isotropic negative-index metamaterials

Materials showing electromagnetic properties that are not attainable in naturally occurring media, the so called metamaterials, have been lately, and still are, among the most active fields in optical and materials physics and engineering. Among those properties, one of the most attractive is the sub-diffraction resolving capability predicted for media having index of refraction of -1. Here we propose a fully 3D, isotropic metamaterial with strong electric and magnetic responses in the optical regime, based on spherical metallo-dielectric core-shell nanospheres. The magnetic response stems from the lowest, magnetic-dipole resonance of the dielectric shell with high refractive index, and can be tuned to coincide with the plasmon resonance of the metal core, responsible for the electric response. Since the response does not originate from coupling between structures, no particular periodic arrangement needs to be imposed. Moreover, due to the geometry of the constituents, the metamaterial is intrinsically isotropic and polarization independent. It could be realized with current fabrication techniques with materials such as Silver (core) and Silicon or Germanium (shell). For these particular realistic designs, the metamaterials present negative index in the range within 1.2-1.55 microns.Materials showing electromagnetic properties that are not attainable in naturally occurring media, so-called metamaterials, have been lately, and still are, among the most active topics in optical and materials physics and engineering. Optimum Forward Light Scattering by Spherical and Spheroidal Dielectric Nanoparticles with High Refractive Index

Photoluminescence from finite semiconductor nanowires is theoretically investigated, exploring and predicting their antenna-like properties for light emission in a variety of configurations of interest in Nanophotonics. The theoretical analysis is based on the leaky/guided mode dispersion relation for infinite nanowires, which govern the local density of available electromagnetic states. Light emission from finite nanowires is then numerically investigated in various scenarios with regard to its enhancement and directionality. A simple analytical model is derived that, upon tuning leaky/guided mode coupling through dipole position/orientation and nanowire length, allows us to predict their antenna-like behavior and thus to tailor photoluminescence (including magnetic dipole transitions) at will, with regard to both enhancement/inhibition and associated radiation patterns.

Fano-like interference of plasmon resonances at a single rod-shaped nanoantenna

F. López-Tejeira; Ramón Paniagua-Domínguez; Rogelio Rodríguez-Oliveros; José A. Sánchez-Gil

High-refractive index dielectric nanoparticles may exhibit strong directional forward light scattering at visible and near-infrared wavelengths due to interference of simultaneously excited electric and magnetic dipole resonances. For a spherical particle shape, the so-called first Kerker’s condition can be realized, at which the backward scattering practically vanishes for some combination of refractive index and particle size. However, realization of Kerker’s condition for spherical particles is only possible at the tail of the scattering resonances, when the particle scatters light weakly. Here we demonstrate that significantly higher forward scattering can be realized if spheroidal particles are considered instead. For each value of refractive index n exists an optimum shape of the particle, which produces minimum backscattering efficiency together with maximum forward scattering. This effect is achieved due to the overlapping of magnetic and electric dipole resonances of the spheroidal particle at th...

High-performance nanosensors based on plasmonic Fano-like interference: probing refractive index with individual nanorice and nanobelts.

F. López-Tejeira; Ramón Paniagua-Domínguez; José A. Sánchez-Gil

Single metallic nanorods acting as half-wave antennas in the optical range exhibit an asymmetric, multi-resonant scattering spectrum that strongly depends on both their length and dielectric properties. Here we show that such spectral features can be easily understood in terms of Fano-like interference between adjacent plasmon resonances. On the basis of analytical and numerical results for different geometries, we demonstrate that Fano resonances may appear for such single-particle nanoantennas provided that interacting resonances overlap in both spatial and frequency domains.

Ultra low-loss, isotropic optical negative-index metamaterial based on hybrid metal-semiconductor nanowires

Ramón Paniagua-Domínguez; Diego R. Abujetas; José A. Sánchez-Gil

We propose two different configurations for which the Fano-like interference of longitudinal plasmon resonances occurring at individual metallic nanoparticles can be easily employed in refractive index sensing: a colloidal suspension of nanospheroids (nanorice) and a single nanowire with rectangular cross section (nanobelt) on top of a dielectric substrate. We numerically study the performance of the two in terms of their figures of merit, which are calculated under realistic conditions. For the case of nanorice, we explicitly incorporate the effect of size dispersity into the simulations. Our obtained results show that the application of the proposed configurations seems to be not only feasible but also very promising.

Recently, many fascinating properties predicted for metamaterials (negative refraction, superlensing, electromagnetic cloaking,…) were experimentally demonstrated. Unfortunately, the best achievements have no direct translation to the optical domain, without being burdened by technological and conceptual difficulties. Of particular importance within the realm of optical negative-index metamaterials (NIM), is the issue of simultaneously achieving strong electric and magnetic responses and low associated losses. Here, hybrid metal-semiconductor nanowires are proposed as building blocks of optical NIMs. The metamaterial thus obtained, highly isotropic in the plane normal to the nanowires, presents a negative index of refraction in the near-infrared, with values of the real part well below −1, and extremely low losses (an order of magnitude better than present optical NIMs). Tunability of the system allows to select the operating range in the whole telecom spectrum. The design is proven in configurations such as prisms and slabs, directly observing negative refraction.
