Students Perceptions of Using Educational Games to Learn Introductory Programming

Roslina Ibrahim; Rasimah Che Mohd Yusoff; Hasiah Mohamed Omar; Azizah Jaafar

Educational computer games studies experienced rapid growth due to the belief that games can offer various learning benefits being highly popular among younger generations. Programming is considered a challenging subject by students and teachers, consequently students feel less motivated to learn it. It is important to know how educational games can help to enhance our student’s motivation and learning perceptions towards Programming. This paper discusses the authors’ pilot study of undergraduate students’ perceptions towards using educational games as their learning medium using five constructs: motivation, attitudes, cognitive development, interface and expectation with 24 items. The findings indicated that most students had encouraging positive attitudes and were more motivated to learn Programming using games compared to conventional methods. The findings are hopefully will help to enrich knowledge in understanding students’ perceptions regarding educational games for learning, particularly in the Malaysian context.

Factors affecting undergraduates' acceptance of educational game: an application of technology acceptance model (TAM)

Roslina Ibrahim; Rasimah Che Mohd Yusoff; Khalili Khalil; Azizah Jaafar

Educational games (EG) are seen as a promising educational technology. This is due to fun and engaging nature of games compared to other media. However, little studies have been done to investigate factors that might affect students acceptance of EG, especially among undergraduate student. Understanding those factors can assist EG designers in designing better games. This study investigated those factors by applying modified technology acceptance model (TAM). Four (4) factors, namely usefulness, ease of use, attitude and learning opportunity were used. An online survey was done with 63 samples from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Data was analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) as well as descriptive method. Findings shown that usefulness, ease of use and attitude are significant acceptance factors of EG. Hopefully, this study will enrich literatures regarding EG acceptance factors especially among undergraduate students.

The Augmented Reality (AR) has existed for over five decades, but the growth and progress in the past few years has been exponentially increased and are getting more popular in recent years. Despite the importance and rapid growth of AR applications in a variety of fields, AR applications is not well known in a library setting. This paper aims to provide a systematic literature review (SLR) method to collect and review studies following a predefined procedure on AR application in a library setting. The review studies includes filtering relevant information of AR application from five databases to answer research questions. A total of 23 primary studies published between 2009 to 2017 were used in the analysis. Results from SLR shows that the most common categories of AR applications used in the libraries setting is reading materials and navigational.

Technological aspect factors of E-learning readiness in higher education institutions: Delphi technique

Asma Ali Mosa Alaraibi; Mohd Naz’ri Mahrin; Rasimah Che Mohd Yusoff

E-learning is an educational method which aims to provide educational or training programs for students or trainees at any time and at any place using information and communication technology (ICT). Increasing numbers of higher education institutions have adopted e-learning in order to take advantage of the opportunities that it offers. Through e-learning, learners can access resources and information from anywhere and at any time. However, the successful implementation of e-learning relies on the readiness to be able to initiate this system because, without proper readiness, the project will probably fail. E-learning readiness refers to the assessment of how ready an institution is to adopt and implement e-learning. E-learning readiness helps higher education institutions to measure their stages of readiness, identify any gaps, and then redesign its strategy in order to adopt the e-learning system. One of the most important aspects of e-learning readiness is the technological aspect, which plays an important role in implementing an effective and efficient e-learning system. There is a lack of agreement about the factors that shape the technological aspects of e-learning readiness; hence, a clear gap has been identified in the knowledge on the technological aspects of e-learning readiness. The aim of this paper is to review the technological factors of e-learning readiness by performing the Delphi technique, and develop an initial model for technological aspects of e-learning readiness in higher education institutions. It is anticipated that this model can help institutions of higher education to identify and understand the technological aspects that must be considered when assessing the readiness to apply an e-learning project.
