Sabira Begum; Bina Shaheen Siddiqui; Razia Sultana; Atiya Zia; Amin Suria

A bioactivity directed isolation of the methanolic extract of the fresh, uncrushed leaves of Nerium oleander showing a central nervous system (CNS) depressant effect in mice has been undertaken. As a result, four CNS depressant cardenolides including a new cardenolide, neridiginoside and three known constituents, nerizoside, neritaloside and odoroside-H, have been isolated which exhibited CNS depressant activity in mice at a dose of 25 mg/kg. The structure of neridiginoside was elucidated as 3 beta-O-(D-diginosyl)-5 beta, 14 beta-dihydroxy-card-20(22)-enolide, using spectroscopic methods including one-dimensional and two-dimensional NMR (COSY-45, NOESY, J-resolved, HMQC and HMBC). The known compounds have been indentified through spectral studies and comparison of data with those reported in the literature.

Triterpenoids from the leaves of Nerium oleander

Sabira Begum; Razia Sultana; Bina S. Siddiqui

Abstract Two new triterpenoids have been isolated from the fresh, uncrushed leaves of Nerium oleander and their structures elucidated as 3β,27-dihydroxy-urs-18-en-13,28-olide and 3β,22α,28-trihydroxy-25-nor-lup-1 (10),20(29)-dien-2-one. Elucidation of the structures was based on spectroscopic methods including one-dimensional and two-dimensional NMR (COSY-45, NOESY and J-resolved).

A new natural product and insecticidal amides from seeds of Piper nigrum Linn.

Bina S. Siddiqui; Tahsin Gulzar; Sabira Begum; Farhana Afshan; Razia Sultana

Studies on the petroleum ether soluble and insoluble fraction of ethanol extract of dried ground seeds of Piper nigrum resulted in the isolation and structure elucidation of 1 new and 11 known compounds which include 3 hitherto unreported constituents, namely, cinnamylideneacetone, 3,4-methylenedioxyphenylpropiophenone and 2-hydroxy-4,5-methylenedioxypropiophenone from this plant.

A New Lanostane Triterpene from Skimmia laureola

Nighat Sultana; Razia Sultana

Aerial parts of Skimmia laureola yielded a new (+)-lanostane-3β ,24-dihydroxy-25-ene triterpene (1) along with fourteen known compounds. The structures were identified by spectroscopic studies Graphical Abstract A New Lanostane Triterpene from Skimmia laureola
