Step and Touch Voltage Distributions at GSM Base Station during Direct Lightning Stroke

Renata Markowska; Andrzej Sowa; J. Wiater

One of the tasks of earthing system is to ensure safety for people during various fault conditions. The objective of this paper is to provide knowledge about the actual step and touch voltage distributions in and around a freestanding base station for mobile communications during direct lightning strike into the communication tower. The final purpose is to limit the danger for people that can be present in the vicinity. Scalar potential at the earth surface as well as step and touch voltage distributions were calculated based on field theory approach.

Measurements of surge currents and potentials in a radio base station

Renata Markowska; A. Sowa; Jaroslaw Wiater

The paper presents a methodology and example results of experimental measurements of surge currents and potentials in a radio base station. The goal of the experiment was to provide complex information on the performance of a radio base station affected by surge currents. Such information may be used in further analysis of lightning threat. The presented method is based on the idea of simulation of lightning strike using a surge generator and simultaneous measurements of surge current flows and potentials at various elements of the station. The final purpose of the experiment is to test and verify numerical models used in analysis of lightning threat and various lightning protection measures.

The influence of earthing systems on lightning current distribution in conductive elements of large halls

Renata Markowska; A. Sowa; Jaroslaw Wiater

The accurate information about lightning current distribution in lightning protection system of structure is very important for the protection of equipment and safety for persons. This paper presents the results of measurements on laboratory models and numerical calculations of lightning current distributions in lightning protection system and construction elements of large industrial and trade halls. Theoretical analyses were performed based on electromagnetic fields theory and circuits methods.

Propagation of overvoltages in residential electrical installation equipped with SPD

Renata Markowska

The problem of simulation of overvoltage propagation in residential electrical installation of a building, which takes into account both electromagnetic couplings and nonlinear operation of a varistor-type SPD (Surge Protective Device) is considered in the paper. The presented analysis comprises areas of numerical simulation and experimental laboratory measurements.

Measurement problems during lighting hazard simulation on the HV substation

Leszek Augustyniak; Renata Markowska; J. Wiater

This paper presents a practical aspect of lightning ground potential rise (GPR) measurements. They were made during normal operation of the real high voltage substation and according a special procedure developed for this occasion. This procedure does not influence the protection relays and ensures a proper work of the HV substation even for 6 kV surges.

Lightning transients in the control and supervision systems on the HV substation

Renata Markowska; Andrzej Sowa; J. Wiater

Electronic devices incorrect operations caused by lightning transients has been observed on the HV substation. This concerns specially the digital devices used in high voltage measuring and controlling techniques. This paper presents a calculation results lightning transients in the control and supervision devices signal inputs during direct lightning strike to the HV substation.
