Creating up-to-date high quality learning materials requires significant resources many instructors cannot afford, especially when it comes to appealing eLearning materials. Peer creation may help to address this challenge. However, existing concepts of peer learning focus mostly on enhancing active discussion and reflection. Thus far, little to no research has addressed processes of systematically creating modular, re-usable learning materials and evaluated the extent to which these materials can enrich the learning experience. To close this gap, we transferred principles of traditional peer learning onto the creation of self-contained, high quality eLearning materials: Web Based Trainings that served as an interactive script and multiple-choice tests as peer assessments. These learning materials were used in a large-scale Information Systems course1. We analyzed user logs, measured learning outcomes by a pre- and post-power-test (n=164) and evaluated learner satisfaction by an online questionnaire (n=128). Results show a significant correlation between usage of the peer created eLearning materials and learning outcomes, as well as satisfaction. The study contributes to the pedagogical research by adapting and evaluating traditional peer learning concepts onto eLearning content creation. To practitioners, it reveals ways of creating high quality eLearning materials in spite of limited resources.

Despite their didactical potential many Virtual Learning Communities VLCs fail in enhancing learning outcomes. Therefore, we synthesise factors most critical for establishing a successful VLC. Applying a structured literature review, we searched for studies dealing with VLCs in the well known databases Business Source Premier, Science Direct and ERIC. We identified, classified and synthesised 64 relevant papers. Results indicate that critical success factors include a strong instructor that acts in different facilitation roles, face-to-face meetings that help establishing social ties and well structured small-group assignments that scaffold the learning process. Main challenges are a lack of common goals, feelings of inhibition and technical problems. Based on the review, we offer concrete advice for instructors building up VLCs. We suggest that future research should focus on the design of methods and tools for instructors to facilitate the learning process in a less resource demanding way.

Universities in Germany face increasing numbers of students, while resources are stagnating or shrinking. Especially large scale lectures suffer from a lack of individualization and interaction, often leading to inefficient learning outcomes and low student satisfaction. We present the concept of instructors co-creating eLearning modules and even parts of the exam with students for improving learning outcomes and student satisfaction. Following an action research approach, we developed, applied, and refined the concept in a mass lecture course setting over four semesters. Evaluation of questionnaires and exam results show that our concept leads to a significant increase in perceived learning satisfaction and learning outcomes. This paper outlines and tests new ways of enhanced learner integration into learning service delivery. It shows the actual impact of student integration into learning content creation, both on service quality and learning outcomes while taking resource efficiency into account.

Abstract: Mobile Learning bietet das Potenzial, nicht nur ein rein selbstgesteuertes E-Learning immer und uberall zu ermoglichen. Vielmehr erlaubt es, E-Learning-Anwendungen auch innerhalb von Vorlesungssalen einzusetzen. Hierbei sind jedoch grundlegend andere Einflusse auf die Nutzungsintention und letztliche Nutzung durch die Lernenden vorhanden als in selbstgesteuerten Lernszenarien. Bisherige Studien adressieren nur unzureichend, inwiefern sich selbstgesteuertes und prasenzgebundenes Mobile Learning unterscheiden. Um diese Forschungslucke zu schliesen, wurde eine Studie im Rahmen einer Massenveranstaltung an der Universitat Kassel durchgefuhrt. Dabei wurden Mobile Learning-Anwendungen sowohl innerhalb als auch auserhalb des Vorlesungssaals eingesetzt und evaluiert. Auf Basis des UTAUT-Modells wurden mittels Online-Befragung die Einflussfaktoren auf die Nutzungsintention von prasenzgebundenem und selbstgesteuertem Mobile Learning mittels Partial Least Squares (PLS) berechnet. Zusatzlich wurden Zufriedenheit und selbst geschatzte Nutzungshaufigkeit der Lernanwendungen abhangig vom verwendeten mobilen Endgerat der Nutzenden betrachtet. Die Ergebnisse zeigen signifikante Unterschiede zwischen den Einflussfaktoren auf prasenzgebundenes und selbstgesteuertes Mobile Learning auf. Wahrend der empfundene Mehrwert den wichtigsten Einflussfaktor auf die Nutzungsintention beim selbstgesteuerten Mobile Learning darstellt, sind dies im Vorlesungsraum soziale Einflusse. Die Identifikation dieser grundlegenden Unterschiede stellt den wesentlichen theoretischen Beitrag der Arbeit dar. Zudem deuten die Ergebnisse in Bezug auf die Endgerate darauf hin, dass innerhalb des Vorlesungssaales Tablet PCs besser fur Mobile Learning geeignet sind und auserhalb gegenwartig noch Laptops. Diese Erkenntnisse bieten Lehrenden Anhaltspunkte uber wichtige zu berucksichtigende Einflussfaktoren im Mobile Learning.
