A rare case of complex odontoma associated with the root of an erupted mandibular primary incisor

Namrata C Gill; Renu Yadav

Odontomas are hamartomatous developmental malformations of dental tissues. Compound odontomas are approximately twice as common as the complex odontomas. Compound odontomas commonly occur in the incisor-canine region of the maxilla and complex odontomas are frequently located in the premolar and molar region of both jaws. These are mostly associated with permanent teeth and only rarely with primary teeth. Odontomas seen in primary dentition are usually of compound type. The purpose of this article is to provide a brief review of literature and present a rare case of complex odontoma in anterior mandible incidentally found during the extraction of an over-retained primary incisor. This paper also highlights the importance of considering an odontoma as a possible cause of over retention of a primary tooth. Early diagnosis of odontomas allows adoption of a less complex and less expensive treatment and ensures better prognosis.

Background: Denture plaque has been shown to be responsible for a variety of soft tissue changes in many denture wearers. Proper routine cleaning of tissue surface of denture is essential to maintain healthy supporting tissue. Aims: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of different denture cleansing methods i.e., mechanical, chemical and combination method, in removal of plaque from the tissue surface of the denture. Materials and Methods: A total of 50 maxillary dentures in healthy edentulous patients were cleaned randomly with either denture brush, denture cleansing tablet, vinegar, denture cleansing tablet followed by brushing and vinegar followed by brushing. At the test session, every denture with 48 hours accumulated plaque on the tissue surface, was disclosed with a two-tone plaque disclosing agent before and after cleaning the denture and the accumulated plaque was scored according to plaque index. Results: The mean difference of the pre- and postcleansing plaque score was statistically significant ( P < 0.001) for all treatment methods. The plaque removing effectiveness was found to be significantly greater with combination method followed by mechanical and chemical methods. Vinegar was shown to be least efficacious as a denture cleanser. Conclusion: Results of present study suggests that combination of brushing and alkaline peroxides should be encouraged to ensure efficient cleansing of dentures.

The use of magnification to perform various procedures in medical and dental field, particularly endodontics has long been recognized. Unfortunately, its application in periodontics is not widely popularized. The objective of this article is to emphasize the application of microsurgical principles in various periodontal surgical procedures and to reinforce the incorporation of microscope into periodontal practice. The most recent periodontal journals were reviewed and a search of databases such as PubMed or Medline and Google Scholar was conducted for relevant material from published literature up to 2017. Medical Subject Headings words looked for were “periodontal microsurgery” and “minimally invasive periodontal surgery.” The available literature, specifically to periodontal surgical procedures was analyzed and compiled. The analysis indicates that incorporation of magnification in periodontal practice is associated with improved visual acuity, ergonomic benefits, decreased patient morbidity, rapid healing, and enhanced patient acceptance.
