The Gunung Padang Site (GPS) is located in Karyamukti Village, Campaka subdistrict, Cianjur District, and is believed by locals to be a legacy of Prabu/King Siliwangi. The location is recognized by the tourism industry as a tourist destination but there has been limited research on its tourism development, particularly in respect of the community’s social capital (which could play an important role in the success of its tourism and ecotourism). This research was designed to provide data on social capital in the community around GPS, and employed interviews based on a modified ‘Social Capital Assessment Tools’ questionnaire. The findings indicate that the community of Karyamukti Village has positive social capital that could be exploited for the ecotourism development of GPS. Community members trust the GPS management (with the exception of the Kompepar). They also trust their informal leader. There are small number of people who still practice customary law, which could be beneficial as a tourist attraction. The community tends to be open towards visitors and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). In terms of networking, the people are involved in various social networks, and have started to develop links with other stakeholders. They have taken proactive action in relation to experience sharing, participation in social organizations, and protection of the environment. However, there was also a negative side to their social capital: they still retain some jealousy of each other with regard to job opportunities. This could pose a threat to the success of any tourism development in that there would likely be unfair competition by individuals or subgroups, which in turn could affect tourism operations in the location.

Dependence of the diversity of aquatic biota with water quality is typical of interaction and mutual influence. Various development activities in a watershed is now being polluted waters. Gold mining activities as open-pit mining activities have a high potential for pollution, especially water turbidity due to sediment erosion at the site of drilling / excavation of land and other open land. Problem of pollution control efforts, particularly in the area of Natarang Mining L.td should do well because in these areas flows Samuong River and its tributaries, which still has a high diversity of aquatic biota. The trend increase in water turbidity, especially seen in the rainy season in Semuong River and its tributaries which in the long term could reduce the density and diversity of aquatic biota, whether plankton, benthos and fish. Keyword: Natarang Mining L.td, aquatic biota , pollution, Semuong river

Sekolah Rimbawan Kecil ( Serincil , literally means School of Little Forester) is nonformal conservation education for the children of Muara Kampong, Cibunian Village, Pamijahan Subdistrict, which is located adjacent to area of Gunung Halimun Salak National Park (GHSNP). The community of the kampong, including parents of Serincil children, relied on GHSNP area for their livelihood. Therefore, conservation education was also important for them to reduce their dependence on GHSNP area, and thus optimizing their role in conservation activities. Evaluation showed that the most intensive implementation of optimization subjects by the community was the one most suitable with their everyday life ( dapur hidup /vegetable farming), while quite intensive on cattle health, and less intensive on poultry farming. Forest tree nursery should be a main priority to establish intensive cooperation between the community and GHSNP management.

This study was carried out to gain data on animal species and their subtances/derivatives believed had medicinal properties that were utilized and traded by local people around Betung Kerihun National Park (BKNP). The study was conducted at the 12 villages around area of BKNP. Snowball method was used to determine respondents. There were 32 respondens interviewed. The data obtained was analysed by using descriptive quantitatively method. The study showed that there were 39 animal species and 19 animal substances/derivatives that utilized as medicinal purposes by local people around BKNP. There were also 9 animal species and 4 animal subtances/derivatives traded by those peoples. Local peopl’s perspectives on animal utilization had been changed from nature to economic orientation. Law enforcement, giving conservation education, involving local peoples on biodiversity conservation management, and introducing captive breeding program to local communities are needed to raise the understanding and awareness of the importance of habitat and animal species conservation in BKNP. Key word: Medicinal Animal, subtances/derivatives, medicinal purposes, utilization, trade, conservation.
