Computational organization of didactic contents for personalized virtual learning environments

This paper presents an organization model for personalized didactic contents used in individual study environments. For many students the availability of contents in a general form might not be effective. A multilevel structure of concepts is proposed to provide different presentation combinations of the same content. Our work shows that it is possible to personalize the didactic content in order to encourage students, by using proximal learning patterns. These patterns are obtained from the analysis of the actions of students with positive results in the individual content organization. The system uses artificial intelligence techniques to reactively organize and personalize content. Personalization is made possible by means of an artificial neural network that classifies the students profile and assigns it a proximal learning pattern. Expert rules are used to mediate and adjust the contents reactively. Experimental results indicate that the approach is efficient and provides the student a better use of the content with adaptive and reactive personalized presentation. A new concept of assistive virtual keyboards based on a systematic review of text entry optimization techniques

Abstract Introduction: Due to the increasing popularization of computers and the internet expansion, Alternative and Augmentative Communication technologies have been employed to restore the ability to communicate of people with aphasia and tetraplegia. Virtual keyboards are one of the most primitive mechanisms for alternatively entering text and play a very important role in accomplishing this task. However, the text entry for this kind of keyboard is much slower than entering information through their physical counterparts. Many techniques and layouts have been proposed to improve the typing performance of virtual keyboards, each one concerning a different issue or solving a specific problem. However, not all of them are suitable to assist seriously people with motor impairment. Methods: In order to develop an assistive virtual keyboard with improved typing performance, we performed a systematic review on scientific databases. Results: We found 250 related papers and 52 of them were selected to compose. After that, we identified eight essentials virtual keyboard features, five methods to optimize data entry performance and five metrics to assess typing performance. Conclusion: Based on this review, we introduce a concept of an assistive, optimized, compact and adaptive virtual keyboard that gathers a set of suitable techniques such as: a new ambiguous keyboard layout, disambiguation algorithms, dynamic scan techniques, static text prediction of letters and words and, finally, the use of phonetic and similarity algorithms to reduce the users typing error rate.

Controle da dengue: os consensos produzidos por Agentes de Combate às Endemias e Agentes Comunitários de Saúde sobre as ações integradas

Dengue is one of Brazils most important public health challenges. Activities for its prevention and control have been based on the strategy of integrated management proposed in health policies, in which the central actors are the Endemic Disease Control Agent(ACE) and the Community Health Agent (ACS). This study analyzes consensus opinions produced by ACSs and ACEs on theactions for incorporating ACEs into the teams of the Family Health Strategy (ESF). It is a qualitative study from a large municipality in Brazil in which dengue is endemic, using a focus group of professionals that is subsequently analyzed using Collective Subject Discourse Analysis, supported by WebQDA. The results indicate consensus positions in relation to the following subjects: I) difficulty in the process of integration of ACSs and ACEs for control of dengue; II) inclusion of ACEs in the primary healthcare of the ESF; and III) absence of monitoring and assessment of the integrated actions. In conclusion, there are needs: to make participants more aware, seeking changes in behavior; to offer an environment of support to those involved with training courses about dengue; and to monitor the process of integration, and evaluate it periodically, creating indicators of quality and quantity.Dengue is one of Brazil’s most important public health challenges. DOCENTES INVESTIGADORES DE PROGRAMAS DE PÓS-GRADUAÇÃO EM EDUCAÇÃO NO BRASIL: ESTUDO SOBRE O USO DE RECURSOS INFORMÁTICOS NO PROCESSO DE PESQUISA

Este estudo propoe compreender o perfil dos docentes brasileiros em relacao ao uso de recursos tecnologicos, mais especificamente os computacionais, no âmbito de suas investigacoes. Para eleger os sujeitos da pesquisa, optou-se por inquirir, a partir da aplicacao de questionarios, um grupo representativo de investigadores da area de Educacao ligados a programas de Pos-Graduacao em nivel de mestrado e doutorado de diferentes Instituicoes de Ensino Superior, referenciadas pelo Ministerio da Educacao do Brasil como programas de excelencia. A base de analise partiu da abordagem quantitativa em um estudo de carater exploratorio a partir de multiplicidades de dimensoes de conteudos presentes nos posicionamentos e ideias dos sujeitos pesquisados. Como orientacao dos procedimentos metodologicos buscou-se na literatura as bases e fundamentos epistemologicos acerca de principios e processos tecnologicos, a partir de um contexto historico, bem como documentos oficiais para fundamentacao politica. Como principais resultados, foi possivel identificar concentracao dos programas de mestrados e doutorados em Educacao, de excelencia, na Regiao Sudeste do Brasil; presenca de novos docentes, em tempo no programa e em idade; forte correlacao entre a idade dos docentes inqueridos com o periodo de formacao em nivel de graduacao, com correlacao reduzida em nivel de mestrado e nao confirmada em nivel de doutorado; utilizacao de bases eletronicas de dados pela maioria absoluta dos docentes pesquisados, e de softwares no âmbito de suas pesquisas, valendo-se de pesquisas mistas (quali-quantitativa), com apoio de recursos informatizados.

Teaching Inclusive Mathematics for Cancer Child Patients in a Hospital Environment

This article aims to explain how teaching and learning processes of early mathematics education happen on a given oncological hospital in the Brazilian state called Goias, Brazil. The qualitative and exploratory research is mainly based on longitudinal data, documents, teaching plans and notes, and semi-structured interviews. The data analyses are based on thematic and content methodologies regarding teaching and evaluation. The research identifies complex challenges that mathematics teachers face daily to teach mathematics in hospitals for children who are diagnosed with cancer and are having cancer treatment. For instance, teaching and learning venues being hospital rooms may not the best place for children to learn or for the teachers to work in.

Perceptions of representatives of a committee against dengue in the health education actions, Goiás, Brazil.

This study aimed to analyze how the educational actions of prevention and control of dengue are performed in Goiás, from the perspective of representatives of the State Mobilization Committee against Dengue. It is a cross-sectional descriptive-analytical study, carried out in Goiânia with 43 representatives of public-private institutions, members of the State Mobilization Committee against Dengue of Goiás, in 2013. The data collection was done through questioning about the perception of health education for dengue prevention. Data were analyzed using content analysis and the WebQDA software. Three dimensions emerged from the analysis: educational aspects, management aspects, and community involvement. Respondents recognized the importance of health education for the prevention of dengue, and of the planning to strengthen the activities of the Committee.Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo analisar como ocorrem as acoes educativas de prevencao e controle da dengue em Goias segundo a percepcao dos representantes do Comite Estadual de Mobilizacao Contra Dengue. Trata-se de um estudo descritivo-analitico, transversal, realizado em Goiânia, com 43 representantes de Instituicoes publico-privadas integrantes do Comite Estadual de Mobilizacao Contra Dengue de Goias, em 2013. A coleta de dados realizada por meio de uma questao sobre a percepcao da educacao em saude para prevencao da dengue. Os dados foram analisados por meio da analise de conteudo com auxilio do software WebQDA. Emergiram da analise tres dimensoes: aspectos educacionais; aspectos de gestao e envolvimento da comunidade. Os respondentes reconheceram a importância da educacao em saude para a prevencao da dengue e do planejamento para fortalecer a atuacao do Comite.
