The article begins with a critical review of the multiplication of concepts today regarding the interrelationships between knowledge and urban development. An overview is given of complementary perspectives, such as knowledge-based cities, learning cities, intelligent cities and creative cities, as the foundation for the proposal that there are four main channels whereby cities join the knowledge society: by innovation systems, by economic structure, by human capital and by networking. On this basis Spanish cities are subjected to a comparative analysis of their knowledge indicators in each of these four components. From the exploratory analysis it is concluded that a sizeable share of Spanish cities are not involved in the process of joining the knowledge society. The rest of the cities are observed to follow one of two contrasting trajectories: cities in metropolitan sectors that are highly prized socially and environmentally have strengthened the presence of knowledge-intensive services and highly qualified human resources, while medium-sized and small cities have specialized in industries of an average or low technological intensity but have made a considerable innovative effort. The text concludes with a reflection on the challenge for local stakeholders to use knowledge to improve the multiple dimensions of urban development.

The impact of the economic crisis should act as an incentive to devise less vulnerable economic development models for Spanish cities. This study confirms that the impact of the creative economy, one of the most interesting initiatives in this context, remains very limited. Furthermore, microdata obtained from a sample of one million workers in Spain, published annually by the Social Security system, confirm that the sharp contrasts emerging in employment quality between sectors and regions, the processes of ‘precariousness of talent’ and labour dualization expressed through inequalities in the occupational structure are each becoming significant threats to viable economic development. For the creative economy to be an effective instrument for metropolitan regeneration, adapted to suit the specificities of particular urban development paths, an improved understanding of the inherent complexity of creative-economy employment relations is required.

The article analyzes the current dynamism of Sagra area, Province of Toledo which is characterized as an emergent space within the regional context due to the high industrial growth rate. In particular it is analyzed the industrial path of this region characterized by a double process of early conformation of a local productive system (endogenous factors) and the metropolitan invasion through the effects of relocation (exogenous factors). After a brief reference to the explanatory theoretical context which allows the explanation of the mentioned processes, a set of indicators is analyzed which shows the emerging character of Castilla - La Mancha. Finally the current industrial dynamism is analyzed from the point of view of sectorial structure and evolution, as well as the strategies applied by the furniture firms —the sector with main tradition in the area— and the promotion of the new industrial areas.

The aim of this article is to analyse the impact of the economic crisis and austerity measures on knowledge-intensive industries in seven large urban areas in Spain. We will attempt to respond to three key questions: How have these activities evolved since the crisis? How have the fiscal austerity measures in force in the Eurozone since 2010 affected them? And finally, have large urban areas followed different development paths in recent years based on the extent of their exposure to the crisis? The analysis of employment tendencies confirms that both common trends and disparities exist, with knowledge-based industries displaying a resilient and countercyclical behaviour. Moreover, the implementation of fiscal austerity policies has had a very negative impact on these activities, but the individual consequences in each case depend on the strengths and weaknesses accumulated by each urban area over time.
