Young people’s world-mindedness and the global dimension in their geography education : a comparative study of upper secondary school students’ ideas in Finland, Germany and the Netherlands

Tine Béneker; Sirpa Tani; Rainer Uphues; Rob van der Vaart

Geography is one of the most important school subjects for the development of global awareness and international understanding. Curricular concepts and pedagogical strategies for developing global awareness through geography abound. What is largely unknown, however, is how young people make sense of the world in which they are growing up and if this has any relationship with their geography education.

The Expansion of Academic Development: The Challenges of Organizational Coordination and Collaboration

Bjørn Stensaker; Rob van der Vaart; Tone Dyrdal Solbrekke; Line Wittek

The chapter describes five examples of dedicated faculty development trajectories for educational leadership in research-intensive universities, focusing on their nature and effects. After discussing and elaborating on the concept of ‘educational leadership’, the chapter portrays and compares professional development trajectories for educational leadership in five research-intensive universities: the universities of Edinburgh, Lund, Oslo, Copenhagen, and Utrecht. Through analysing similarities and differences between the initiatives, different pathways towards educational leadership are outlined, although they all can be said to support educational leaders. As such, the chapter provides insights and lessons for those interested in systematic development of the next generation of educational leaders.

Strategic Challenges in the Development of Teaching and Learning in Research-Intensive Universities

Bjørn Stensaker; Grahame T. Bilbow; Lori Breslow; Rob van der Vaart

Research universities have in recent years invested a lot of resources in developing their capacity to act and function as more strategic actors in research and teaching. This has resulted in an extensive expansion of activities that are labelled as academic development and a broadened scope of actors and initiatives in this area. The expansion of academic development has also caused considerable challenges as to how all this activity should be coordinated and led. This chapter identifies the drivers behind the expansion of academic development, illustrates how such expansion takes place in two universities and discusses the future implications for the work to improve the quality of teaching and learning.

Teaching the Geographies of Urban Areas: Views and Visions

Tine Béneker; Rickie Sanders; Sirpa Tani; Liz Taylor; Rob van der Vaart

The chapter provides an introduction to the current challenges facing many research-intensive universities throughout the world. It is argued that issues related to teaching and learning are becoming more important as a way to improve competitiveness and an institution’s profile in a more globalised higher education sector. However, fostering change in research-intensive universities is often dependent on careful design addressing the normative, practical and organisational factors that may prevent institutional transformation. In the conclusion, it is emphasized that initiatives that aim at cultural transformation may be a fruitful way forward for institutions trying to enhance their teaching and learning in a more systematic way.
