‘Total Transformation’: Why Kant Did Not Give up on Education

In this essay I argue that Kant remained committed to the necessity and fundamental importance of education throughout his career. Like Johann Bernhard Basedow (1724–90), Kant holds that a ‘total transformation’ of schools is necessary, and he holds this view not only in the 1770s but in his later years as well. In building my case I try to refute two recent opposing interpretations – Reinhard Brandt’s position that Kant’s early ‘education enthusiasm’ was later replaced by a politics enthusiasm, and Manfred Kuehn’s view that the increasing importance of autonomy in Kant’s mature ethics leads him to de-emphasize education.

The Last Frontier: The Importance of Kant's Geography

The first full English translation of Friedrich Theodor Rinks edition of Kants Physical Geography was finally published in 2012, and several significant transcriptions of Kants classroom lectures on physical geography are still forthcoming in volume 26 of the German Academy edition of his Collected Writings. Why has Kants work on geography suffered from so much neglect? Contrary to received scholarly wisdom, I argue that the main cause of the neglect is not Rinks editorial sloppiness. Rather, Kants Geography is simply not viewed as being as important as his ethics, logic, metaphysics, theology, and anthropology. In my paper I argue that Kants Geography deserves our respect, and I present four key reasons for taking it seriously.

Becoming Human: Kant’s Philosophy of Education and Human Nature

Louden argues that, appearances to the contrary, philosophy of education is of central importance to Kant’s overall philosophical program. Its chief importance stems largely from the commanding position that education holds within his theory of human nature. In Kant’s view, education is fundamentally about the effort to realize our humanity. As he proclaims near the beginning of the Lectures on Pedagogy: “The human being can only become human through education. He is nothing except what education makes out of him” (LP 9:443).

The Scope of Autonomy: Kant and the Morality of Freedom

piece by Karl Ameriks which focuses on the way that the influence of Rousseau on Kant at this stage helped lead Kant to a decisive change in his conception of history. Ameriks’ claim is that Kant takes from Rousseau the understanding that the modern era is one in which the moral climate has been decisively altered by the impact of the sciences. The reason for this view is that the success of the sciences has produced a response to morality where it is viewed either as based on a special kind of ability or, in lieu of any such being found, reduced to a merely contingent and relative status. In response to this, the appeal to ‘feeling’ arises as an attempt to counteract rationalistic construal of morality but this appeal itself confirms the relativistic reduction of its status. The ‘crisis’ that ensues in the understanding of morality pushes Kant to formulate a view of reason that is neither instrumental nor theoretical. The emphasis of Ameriks’ chapter is on the way that the reading of Rousseau during the 1760s thus provoked in Kant a form of waking from ‘dogmatic slumber’ quite distinct from the famed one provided by Hume. Whilst Rousseau would not influence Kant’s philosophical methodology, the egalitarian impulse of his morality is derived from the impact on Kant of Rousseau. Hence, Kant’s conception of the primacy of practical reason, a conception that requires the formulation of a metaphysics of freedom, is one that comes from Rousseau’s historical diagnosis of modernity. In making this case, Ameriks’ chapter balances the emphasis of Cohen’s, suggesting as it does that the influence of Rousseau, as revealed in the Remarks, counterbalanced the naturalistic temptations Cohen traced as operative in the Observations. A number of essays in this volume are of high quality and the overall result of it is certainly to make clear that there are both philosophical and historical reasons to take seriously the early texts of Kant that it treats. This volume is, thus, one that scholars of Kant’s development will certainly want to consult and will likely turn to again and again.

Education and the overcoming of evil

Abstract In this essay, I try to make sense out of Kant’s unusual concept of grace, particularly as regards its uneasy relationship to education within the context of the effort to overcome evil. The key to the puzzle, I argue, lies in what I call ‘moral receptivity’. Part of education’s job is to make us morally receptive to grace by preparing us for its possibility.
