Abstract The increase in downsizings and company closings over the past decade have been accompanied by an increase in the research of job loss. We present a model of response to involuntary job loss which is based on the stress, appraisal, and coping theory presented by Lazarus and Folkman (1984). A main purpose of this model is to integrate previous research on job loss. Specifically, this model discusses coping resources, forms of cognitive appraisal, coping strategies, and both immediate and long-term outcomes that have been examined in previous studies. Additionally, we discuss how this model provides guidance for future research about job loss.
