A review of the tenuipalpidae (Acari: Prostigmata) of Australia with descriptions of two new genera and four new species

Robert L. Smiley; Uri Gerson

Abstract Two new genera and four new species of Australian tenuipalpid mites are described and illustrated. A key to all 18 known Australian species is provided, along with a review of their distribution, host plants, biology and damage. The two new genera are Australopalpus and Lisaepalpus. The new species are: Australopalpus alphitoniae, Lisaepalpus smileyae, Tenuipalpus toowongi, and Ultratenuipalpus bunyai. Names of known taxa are: Brevipalpus californicus, B. lewisi, B. obovatus, B. phoenicis, Dolichotetranychus australianus, D. floridanus, Macfarlaniella queenslandica, Raoiella australica, Tegopalpus conicus, Tenuipalpus banksiae, T. grevilleae, T. mansoniculus, T. pacificus, and T. womersleyi.

A report on some tetranychid mites (Acari: Prostigmata) from Yemen

Robert L. Smiley; Edward W. Baker

Abstract Ten genera with one new subgenus and 17 species from Yemen are described and illustrated. Thirteen of these species are new: Bryobia tuttlei, B. pseudorubrioculus, Pseudobryobia abbatielloi, Beerella yemenensis, Paraplonobia dactyloni, Neopetrobia hilariae, Eutetranychus pruni, E. ricinus, E. sanaae, E. transverstriatus, Mixonychus neoacaciae, Oligonychus dactyloni, and O. oenotherae. Bryobia (Septobia) bakeri is newly recorded from this country. Four other undetermined species (all females) are described and figured: Eotetranychus sp. ex Hilaria sp., E. sp. ex Solanum elaeagnifolium Cav., Oligonychus sp. ex Convolvulus arvensis L., and O. sp. ex Hilaria sp. Four known species are briefly redescribed and illustrated in order to provide the first comprehensive report of the spider mite fauna of Yemen.

A new species of Steneotarsonemus (Acari: Tarsonemidae) and an illustrated key to grass-infesting species in the Western Hemisphere

Robert L. Smiley; Carlos H.W. Flechtmann; Ronald Ochoa

Abstract A new species, Steneotarsonemus brasiliensis, is described and illustrated. An illustrated key is presented to separate adult, males and females of Steneotarsonemus spp. (Acari: Tarsonemidae), known to occur on gramineous plants (Poaceae) in the Western Hemisphere. Information on their hosts and distribution is included.

A taxonomic study of the genus Haemogamasus in North America, with descriptions of two new species (Acari: Mesostigmata, Laelaptidae)

G. L. Williams; Robert L. Smiley; B. C. Redington

Abstract A key, descriptions, illustrations, distribution, and hosts are given for eleven species of Haemogamasus known to occur in North America. Included are descriptions of two new species. Species are placed into two groups, the liponyssoides and reidi groups, based on morphological characteristics.

A new Pyemotes (Acari: Pyemotidae) reared from the Douglas-fir cone moth

John C. Moser; Robert L. Smiley; I.S. Otvos

Abstract Pyemotes barbara, n. sp., is illustrated and described. This species is parasitic on pupae of Barbara colfaxiana (Kearfott), one of the important cone and seed pests of Douglas-fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirbel) Franco. The Pyemotes mite considered here is a candidate for the biological control of forest insects.

A revision of the subfamily Tegopalpinae, with the descriptions of two new genera and five new species (Acari: Tenuipalpidae)

Robert L. Smiley; William E. Frost; Uri Gerson

Abstract The subfamily Tegopalpinae in the family Tenuipalpidae (Acari: Prostigmata) is revised. The genera Tegopalpus Womersley, Philippipalpus Corpuz-Raros and Australopalpus Smiley and Gerson are redescribed (along with a description of the hitherto unknown female of T. conicus). Two new genera, namely Crossipalpus (type species: C. verticillatae) and Meyeraeopalpus (type species: M. delfinadae) are proposed. The following new species Crossipalpus muellerianae, C. creelae and Meyeraepalpus strandtmanni, are also described. A key to all Tegopalpinae is appended. All new genera and species were found on trees belonging to the family Casuarinaceae, and it is possible that additional mite species referable to this subfamily may be found in the future thereon, especially in Australia.

A new species of Hughesiella (Acari: Astigmata, Pyroglyphidae) from Costa Rica

V Mario Vargas; Robert L. Smiley

Abstract Hughesiella valerioi n.sp. (Acari, Pyroglyphidae, Pyroglyphinae) is described from specimens collected from chickens, goat, house dust, and pigeon litter in Costa Rica. The new species differs from H. africana in the lengths of sce and 15 and in the presence of a claw-like ventral projection on leg I.

A new cloacarid mite (Acari: Cloacaridae) from the lungs of the Great Horned Owl, Bubo virginianus, from the U.S.A.

A. Fain; Robert L. Smiley

Abstract Pneumophagus bubonis n.g., n.sp. (Acari: Cloacaridae) is described from the lungs of the Great Horned Owl, Bubo virginianus (Gmelin), from the U.S.A. A new subfamily Pneumophaginae n. subfam., is created in the Cloacaridae for this new genus. It is the first member of this mite family found in a bird.

Chelacaropsis moorei Baker (Acari: Cheyletidae): redescription of the male and female

Chariya Lekprayoon; Robert L. Smiley

ABSTRACT Genus Chelacaropsis Baker, 1949 is redefined, and the type species, Chelacaropsis moorei Baker is illustrated and redescribed.
