Multiple Multinational Tourism Positioning Using Correspondence Analysis

Roger J. Calantone; C. Anthony Di Benedetto; Ali Hakam; David C. Bojanic

Multinational tourism research involves analysis of multiple origins, multiple tourist destinations, and multiple attributes for destination selection . For example, tourist perceptions of a destination may vary across countries of origin. This can have important implications for which countries to target with tourism promotion, or which of the destinations attributes should be stressed in the promotion. Correspondence analysis is a technique which can handle problems of this complexity where other multiattribute analytical methods cannot. This technique is applied to empirical tourist perception data on Singapore and other Pacific Rim countries. A discussion of how the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board can use the resulting output to improve Singapores positioning in the tourism market is presented.

Beyond Psychographics: Values as Determinants of Tourist Behavior

Abraham Pizam; Roger J. Calantone

Abstract To analyze the relationship between subjects values (both general and ‘object-specific’) and their travel behavior, 60 undergraduate students were administered a set of 6 general value scales and an ‘object-specific’ vacation value scale that was intentionally developed for this purpose. The subjects last years travel behavior was measured on an 8-variable ordinal scale. The results indicate that the combined general values and object-specific values successfully predicted anywhere between 41 and 81% of travel behavior.

Strength of Ethnic Affiliation: Examining Black Identification with Black Culture

Tommy E. Whittler; Roger J. Calantone; Mark R. Young

Abstract Research on ethnicity has rarely considered ethnic affiliation as an individual-difference variable. Few attempts have been made to measure the intensity of affiliation with the ethnic group. This study examined the psychometric characteristics of a scale assessing Blacks identification with Black culture in the United States. The findings provide support for the instruments reliability and validity and suggest that it can be used to segment the Black population.

Multimethod forecasts for tourism analysis.

Roger J. Calantone; Anthony di Benedetto; David C. Bojanic

This paper examines the use of combined forecasting methods in tourism forecasting. The use of multiple methods allows more information to be incorporated into the forecasts. The objective of the paper is to show that forecasts of tourism arrivals obtained by combining forecasting models are more accurate (therefore more useful to practicing managers) than single-method forecasts. Several combined forecasts of tourist arrivals in Florida obtained and compared to single-method forecasts gained through econometric or time-series models. Parameter interpretation and forecasting accuracy of both combined and single-method forecasts are discussed. The conclusion of the paper offers a commentary on the usefulness of multimethod approaches to forecasting.

Price bundling in public recreation.

David C. Bojanic; Roger J. Calantone

Abstract This article examines the use of price bundling as a marketing technique for recreation services. The use of conjoint analysis allows the researcher to determine consumers’ part‐worth utilities for various service attributes. This information can then be used to design a service bundle or package and determine the price to be charged. This approach to service design is applied to an actual case involving the visitor accommodations at a state department of parks. Consumers are segmented in order to enhance the analysis and provide management with more useful information. The limitations of the study and methodology are discussed along with strategic implications for park managers. Finally, suggestions are provided for future research in this area.

Defensive industrial marketing strategies

Roger J. Calantone; C. Anthony Di Benedetto

This study provides a framework for industrial product managers to select defensive marketing strategies for products facing competitive attack. The proposed model is based on Hauser and Shugans Defender model. It can be used by marketing decision makers to assess the impact of competitive attack on a firms shares and contributions, as well as the effects of a range of possible defensive maneuvers. It therefore can serve as an effective model for planning response strategies. An actual (disguised) real-life application of the model to an industrial-product situation is presented and discussed.

A contribution approach to price bundling in tourism

David C. Bojamic; Roger J. Calantone

Abstract The purpose of this paper is to present a framework that integrates the economic and marketing approaches to price bundling, including demand and cost considerations. Consumer preferences for various tourism service designs are determined and a contribution analysis is performed to assess the potential profitability of the various designs. Conjoint analysis results are used as input to a logit model in order to estimate the effect of service design on the demand for a state parks services. The paper demonstrates how important it is to include demand and cost information in the design of tourism-related services.

The use of discrete variable selections for credit evaluations

Roger J. Calantone; Ca Di Benedetto; Vr Errunza

A discriminant model for evaluation of loan applicants by bank managers should be capable of handling a wide variety of data in a parsimonious manner. Frequently the data will be discrete, and not easily converted to continuous form. Furthermore, missing data may be a problem. This paper examines the use of a discrete discriminant analytic technique in credit screening in a rural setting. The efficiency of the model is evaluated with regard to both rate and costs of misclassification.
