This paper presents an optical film that enhances cosmetic appearance as well as brightness in a liquid crystal display (LCD) through microprisms that have a variable pitch. The optical film utilizes Fourier transformation to optimize the arrangement of microprisms for improving the cosmetic appearance in the display. The optical film has an improved light-collimating feature that redirects light more effectively, resulting in higher brightness. This paper shows details of the design procedure, but more importantly, presents optical measurement results of an actual optical film prototype to confirm the performance improvement.

This paper presents an optical film that enhances cosmetic appearance, as well as head-on brightness, through two-dimensional, light-redirecting structures that have variable pitch. The optical film utilizes the analysis of Moire appearance in spatial frequency space to optimize the arrangement of microstructures to improve the cosmetic appearance of displays. The optical film has an improved light-collimating microstructure that sends light more effectively from a light guide plate, resulting in higher head-on brightness. This paper shows the detail of the design procedure, but more importantly, it presents optical measurement results of actual optical film prototypes to confirm performance improvement.

This paper presents an optical film for enhancing head-on luminance through light-redirecting structures with a variable pitch. The optical film has an improved light-collimating microstructure that redirects light more effectively, resulting in higher head-on luminance.

Optical designs often specify both surface form and centering (tilt and lateral displacement) tolerances on aspheric surfaces. Such tolerances are often ambiguous and current standards do not resolve this ambiguity. We describe several difficult issues that arise in attempting to interpret aspheric centering tolerances and their consequences for optical design and metrology. We conclude by calling on the optics community to standardize an interpretation method for aspheric tolerances.
