Imperative as conditional : From constructional to compositional semantics

Abstract The topic of constructional inheritance is discussed by means of a detailed qualitative analysis of the conditional imperative construction in Dutch and in Russian. It is argued that the two distinctive features of this construction, as compared with other conditional constructions such as explicit ‘if ’ conditionals, can be motivated in a compositional approach: (i) from the directive imperative construction, the conditional use inherits intersubjective meaning; (ii) from the conditional paratactic construction, it inherits the pragmatic (context-dependent) feature that the situation in the protasis immediately leads to the situation in the apodosis. As such, we show that a compositional analysis, defined as constructional inheritance, is fruitful in motivating both the semantics and the pragmatics of complex constructions.

Extending the scope of construction grammar

The field of constructionist linguistics is rapidly expanding, as research on a broad variety of language phenomena is increasingly informed by constructionist ideas about grammar. This volume is comprised of 11 original research articles representing several emerging new research directions in construction grammar, which, together, offer a rich picture of the various directions in which the field seems to be moving.

Discussie over C.L. Ebeling, Semiotaxis. Over theoretische en Nederlandse syntaxis - De betekenis en interpretatie van Semiotaxis

Semiotaxis van C.L. Ebeling (2006) werd in Nederlandse Taalkunde al besproken door A.M. Duinhoven (2007), die vooral inging op de theoretische uitgangspunten van Ebeling en het door hem gebruikte notatiesysteem. Vanwege de beperkte omvang van een boekbespreking kon Duinhoven slechts een paar van de vele onderwerpen die Ebeling aan de orde stelt, in meer detail behandelen. Gezien de veelzijdige inhoud van Semiotaxis, bleef er dan ook voldoende ruimte om in de rubriek Discussie nogmaals aandacht te vragen voor dit werk. Een aantal auteurs werd gevraagd te reageren op Ebelings analyse van een specifiek probleem uit de Nederlandse grammatica. De gekozen onderwerpen waren uiteindelijk de volgende: het lidwoord en lidwoordloosheid (Ina Schermer), de betekenis(sen) van het voltooid deelwoord (Els Elffers), de valentiestructuur van werkwoorden (Timothy Colleman) en grammaticaal geslacht/genus (Andries van Helden); Henk Verkuyl las op ons verzoek Semiotaxis met de bril van een logisch-semanticus. De vorm van deze rubriek gaf ons bovendien de mogelijkheid om in een afsluitende bijdrage Ebeling zelf op zijn critici te laten reageren. In deze inleiding schetsen we eerst de historische en theoretische achtergronden van Semiotaxis en vatten we de bijdragen aan de Discussie kort samen.
