This study aims to elucidate the relationship between risk management and project success, considering the contingent effect of project complexity. This approach also combines aspects of soft and hard skills. This methodological approach involves a literature review to underpin the conceptual framework and a survey for empirical validation, using structural equation modelling. The hypotheses were tested based on a field study involving 263 projects distributed among eight industries. The fieldwork involved interviews with project managers and risk managers and an analysis of internal company documents about the projects’ performance. The structural model presented herein provides a means for correlating the hard and soft sides of risk management with project success, understanding the moderating effect of project complexity. The soft side of risk management appears most prominently and explains 10.7% of the effect on project success. Moreover, the soft side supports the hard side, since we found a significant correlation that explains 25.3% of the effect on the hard side.

The project management methodology has been increasingly applied in companies nowadays. Nevertheless, in Brazilian panorama it is also difficult to verify the adoption of formal project management program. Companies searching for competitive advantages through innovation must have competencies in project management. Meeting project efficiency involves balancing scope expectations and the available resources. Thus, project management addresses the full range of concepts, tools and techniques to improve project performance and organizational effectiveness and efficiency. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate projects competencies management practices. The adopted methodological approach was a case study in a Research Organization. The analysis was performed based on two major approaches: the first one is the project effectiveness and efficiency evaluation (tasks and results), and the second one is the organizational maturity.

The goal of this study is to comprehend the impact of risk management on project performance. Further it aims to investigate the degree of diffusion of risk management practice in Brazilian companies. The methodological approach involves a survey of 415 projects at different levels of complexity in different industrial sectors in several states of Brazil. The results demonstrate that adopting risk management practices has a significant positive impact on project success. They also show a positive impact from the presence of a risk manager on project success. The study’s principal limitations are the methodological choice of non probability sampling and a questionnaire based on respondent perception. From the practical point of view, paying attention to uncertainties during the project, making use of the risk management techniques and deeply understand the business environment are critical success factors, demanding attention of project managers and risk managers. The results demonstrate the impact of risk management practices on project success. They also show a positive impact from the presence of a risk manager on project success. Furthermore, it demonstrated the importance of soft skill in risk management.

The relevance of project management has been increasingly studied. Different approaches can be found in the academic and practitioners bibliography, emphasizing the importance of project management and competencies’ building to companies that looking for a competitive advantages by innovation. These companies need to acquire competencies to build project teams and to deal with multiple functions and different approaches (Frame, 1999). The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the projects competencies management practices. The adopted methodological approach was a survey with 106 project manager and team members. The analysis was performed based on two major approaches: the first one is the project effectiveness and efficiency evaluation (tasks and results), and the second one is the team-oriented evaluation. This study aims to understand the links between project management practices and organizational structure and competences. The case study methodology was chosen in order to present an empirical investigation. The research was conducted in a company in the automotive sector. The results show the structure determinants, among which are: lack of memory technology, management development, and cost structure. Furthermore, a scenario of low competences was found in the individual, team , and organizational dimensions.

This paper presents the results of an investigation in four Brazilian States on the adoption of Risk Management practices in projects with different complexity levels. The field research involved 415 projects from nine different economic sectors. Data was gathered through a questionnaire applied to managers and project team members. Results showed that there are significant and positive impacts in the adoption of Risk Management practices on project success. It also showed that there is dependence between perceived success and the presence/absence of a risk manager, i.e., the presence of a risk manager has positive impacts on project success. The major limitation of this study concerns the methodological choice: non-probability sample survey based on respondents perception. The work promotes the integration between Risk Management practices and projects performance, providing a basis for further studies in other sectors and areas of project knowledge.
