The journey to sustainable universities: insights from a Brazilian experience

Universities play a key role in humanitys search for sustainable development. This paper presents the results of preliminary studies on projects regarding campus sustainability, conducted at Universidade Estadual Paulista Julio de Mesquita Filho - UNESPs Bauru Campus, State of Sao Paulo. It recommends the constitution of a sustainability committee, with a public participation and social responsibility (PPSR) framework, and the implementation of a campus sustainability program. The study also describes how social responsibility and sustainability can bring UNESP/Bauru economic advantages.

Agricultural production and sustainable development in a Brazilian region (Southwest, São Paulo State): motivations and barriers to adopting sustainable and ecologically friendly practices

The objective of this study is to identify the adoption level of practices associated with more sustainable agriculture and environmentally friendly practices. Additionally, the motivations for and barriers to the adoption of these practices by farmers are investigated. Data were collected through closed questionnaires taken by a random sample of farmers in the Southwest, São Paulo, Brazil, during the second half of 2013. Overall, sustainable agricultural practices recommended in the literature and analysed in this study are being not fully adopted by farmers of the studied area. The results showed that financial motivation is associated with farmers adopting new, more sustainable technology, whereas the lack of information on and lack of technical support for these technologies are significant barriers. Other results, research implications, limitations and suggestions for future research are presented.

Environmental consideration is no longer regarded as a trend but a way of life for industry. For many companies over the past few decades, there has been a shift in addressing environmental issues. Actions that were taken at the operational level due to regulative demands are now being discussed at the strategic level (Nilsson, 2001). The idea of sustainability must consider the interplay of social, economic and environmental aspects with integrated and long-term perspectives.

Abordagem metodológica de investigação das redes inter-firmas sob a perspectiva de estratégia de operações

A maioria dos estudos disponiveis sobre estrategia de operacoes tem sido feitos sob o paradigma de unidades dennegocios (SKINNER, 1969; HAYES e WHEELWRIGHT, 1984; FINE e HAX, 1985; SAMSON, 1991; HILL, 2000).nRecentemente, foi proposta outra abordagem ampliada e atualizada para o campo de estrategia de operacoes, masnainda trabalhando sob o paradigma de unidades de negocios (SLACK e LEWIS, 2002) e unidades de negocio enredes intra-firmas (RUDBERG e OLHAGER, 2003; HAYES et al., 2004). No entanto, hoje em dia o x93novox94nparadigma de competicao de redes inter-firmas determina a necessidade para que os estudos sejam feitos sob umanvisao mais holistica. Este artigo apresenta os resultados de uma pesquisa de campo, para verificar-se a validez danteoria de estrategia de operacoes, que foi desenvolvida sob um paradigma de unidades de negocios, sob umanperspectiva de redes inter-firmas. Para isso, foi necessario fazer algumas adaptacoes nas abordagens metodologicasnexistentes de estrategia de operacoes, para lidar com as especificidades apresentado por redes inter-firmas. Sob estencontexto, este artigo apresenta uma abordagem metodologica, para ampliar o escopo de duas areas de decisao denestrategia de operacoes (integracao vertical e instalacoes), mas considerando uma perspectiva de redes inter-firmas.nAdicionalmente, o artigo apresenta um exemplo, envolvendo uma pesquisa exploratoria e qualitativa, para ilustrarna utilidade da abordagem proposta numa rede inter-firmas.
