While the gas phase pyrolysis of exo - and endo -pentamethylhomofulvene (1,2,3,4,6-pentamethy1–4-methylenebicyclo[3.1.0]-hex-2-ene) leads to pentamethylvinylcyclopentadiene, the pyrolysis products in the presence of di - t .-butyl peroxide are the three isomeric tetramethylethylbenzenes in the ratio 2:2:1. The aromatiza-tion reaction seems to proceed by an intermolecular methyl migration. Hexamethylhomofulvene, even in the presence of peroxide, is isomerized only to pentamethylpropenylcyclopentadiene, while tetramethylhomofulvene isomerizes to pentamethylbenzene under all conditions. The fact that the 2,3,5,6-tetramethylbenzyl radical does not show an intramolecular hydrogen shift is an important control experiment for a discussion of the reaction mechanism.
