Lithium niobate offers incredible versatility as a substrate for integrated optics. Researchers have developed an array of new optical devices based on this material, including waveguide structures, electro-optical wavelength filters and polarization controllers, lasers with remarkable properties, nonlinear frequency converters of exceptional efficiency, ultrafast all-optical signal processing devices and single photon sources.

Erbium-Doped Lithium Niobate Waveguide Lasers

W. Sohler; Bijoy Krishna Das; Dibyendu Dey; S. Reza; H. Suche; Raimund Ricken

The recent progress in the field of Ti:Er:LiNbO 3 waveguide lasers with emission wavelengths in the range 1530 nm < λ < 1603 nm is reviewed. After a short discussion of the relevant fabrication methods concepts and properties of different types of lasers with grating resonator, acoustooptically tunable Fabry Perot type lasers and new ring laser structures are presented.

Acousto-optically tunable integrated Ti:Er:LiNbO/sub 3/ laser

S. Reza; H. Herrmann; Viktor Quiring; Raimund Ricken; K. Schafer; H. Suche; W. Sohler

Wavelength tunable, narrow linewidth lasers are of growing importance for optical communication systems using wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM). A diode-pumped packaged acousto-optically tunable integrated Ti:Er:LiNbO/sub 3/ waveguide laser could be tuned (not continuously) over 31 nm in the wavelength range 1530 nm </spl lambda/<1610 nm with an emission linewidth of 0.3 nm. Here we report an improved version of the laser with a modified design; its tuning range is extended to 47 nm with a linewidth smaller than 12 pm in appropriate operating conditions adjusted.

All-Optical Signal Processing Devices with (Periodically Poled) Lithium Niobate Waveguides

W. Sohler; Werner Grundkötter; Harald Herrmann; Hao Hu; Sander L. Jansen; J.H. Lee; Yoo Hong Min; Viktor Quiring; Raimund Ricken; S. Reza; Hubert Suche; R. B. Wehrspohn

Integrated optical Lithium Niobate devices for all-optical signal processing in the 1.5 mum wavelength range are reviewed. Besides nonlinear devices with periodically poled waveguides tunable Ti:Er:LiNbO3 waveguide lasers are presented. Novel waveguide structures are reported.

High Resolution Optical Frequency Domain Ranging with an Integrated Frequency Shifted Feedback (FSF) Laser

S. Reza; Raimund Ricken; Viktor Quiring; W. Sohler

In this contribution we report the first demonstration of high resolution OFDR with an integrated tuneable Ti:Er:LiNbO3 FSF-laser (lambdaLap1550 nm). Even without seeding a resolution of up to 2.5 mum has been achieved.
