Rahmat Hashim; Salehuddin Mohd Zahari; Salleh Mohd Radzi; Saidatul Afzan Abd Aziz

Success or failure of tourism industry relies heavily on how the host nations control and manage the industry, strategies and manage its capital and resources, including human. At the core, the survival and competitiveness of the industry depend largely on the workforce. It seems obvious that hospitality management schools are now playing a critical role in providing support for the unprecedented development of the industry. This will depend largely on how educational institutions conceptualise hospitality management education. In order to identify the knowledge domain of the industry, the initial competence statements were drawn, adapted and collated from various studies. Industry professionals were identified using the Tourism Malaysia database on Malaysian hotels. The actual return was 132 or 39% of the 337 questionnaires sent. Eleven (11) factors were clearly defined. The result from the factor analysis has produced 11 underlying dimensions representing the 104 statements. The combined 11 factors accounted for 64.4 % of the total variance.

This study investigates contents from the websites of leading hotel groups in Indonesia which specify the competencies that are required by star hotels for potential managerial level recruits. This preliminary investiga-tion identified a list of competencies that are expected by hotels and incorporated them into Sandwiths competency domain model with a view to determining the essential competencies. The results showed that leader-ship and interpersonal competencies were deemed as the most expected competencies at both junior and senior management levels. The identified competencies may be used as a basis for providing a better understanding of hotel manager competencies as a foundation for improving hospitality curricula in Indonesia.

The importance of education of sustainability became more prominent in higher learning institutions of developed nations in the form of research and policy setting since the publication of the United Nations’ Decade for Education for Sustainable Development report. On the other hand, this movement has yet to advance as effectively in developing and emerging countries. In line with the crucial need to expand the understanding of environmental studies in higher learning institution in Malaysia, this conceptual paper proposes to gauge students’ grasp on sustainability issues by employing the Environmental Attitudes Inventory (EAI) as measurement scale. This instrument was designed to evaluate the psychological tendency in favour or disfavour towards the conservation of the natural environment, constructed on two factors: preservation and utilization. The findings will provide insight into theoretical knowledge discussion and practical recommendations in actions that can be undertaken to promote sustainability on campus.

e-Learning has become a major tool to facilitate education. The education process becomes easier with the functions provided by e-Learning. UiTM has promoted e-Learning for educational purpose since 2005 to complement face-to-face classrooms teaching and learning. This survey exposed the students to the interactive learning by adopting course forum for students participation. The aim is to familiarize and encourage participation in i-learn. Students need to participate in e-Commerce forum where they need to advertise and sell products in the e-Commerce forum. The survey conducted for four months and found that students participation in the five parameters set by the instructor is quite satisfactory however most of the students still prefer face-to-face interactions for buying goods. Other than that, this survey recommend that the use of interactive learning must be promoted aggressively because students will use technology wisely if the right platform is provided to them.
