Leiomyoma of the female urethra

M.M. Unni Mooppan; Hong Kim; Sandor H. Wax

Leiomyoma of the urethra is a rare condition, which is more common in female than in male subjects. There are only 14 documented cases of leiomyoma of the female urethra in the literature. A careful analysis of these cases revealed the average patient age to be 34.1 years. The site of the lesion determined the clinical features and the surgical approach. No common etiological factor could be ascertained. Two additional cases of leiomyoma of the female urethra are reported.

Avulsion of the Ureter Caused by Stone Basket Manipulation

Magdy Abdelsayed; Erol Onal; Sandor H. Wax

A case of an iatrogenic loss of 18 cm. of the distal ureter owing to attempted basket retrieval of a lower ureteral stone is reported. The defect was bridged by mobilizing the kidney, constructing a Boari flap and fixing the bladder with a Psoas hitch. The complications of stone manipulating are reviewed and discussed.

Urinary Hydroxyproline Excretion as a Marker of Osseous Metastasis in Carcinoma of the Prostate

M.M. Unni Mooppan; Sandor H. Wax; Hong Kim; Jen C. Wang; Mark S. Tobin

Urinary hydroxyproline was elevated significantly in patients with untreated stage D prostatic carcinoma when compared to values in patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy and prostatic carcinoma without bony metastasis. Our results indicate that hydroxyproline may be a valuable marker in early staging, followup and evaluating treatment in prostatic cancer.

The Value of Urinary Fibrin/Fibrinogen Degradation Products as Tumor Markers in Urothelial Carcinoma

S. Jayachandran; M.M. Unni Mooppan; Sandor H. Wax; Hong Kim

Urinary fibrin/fibrinogen degradation products as biological tumor markers in urothelial carcinoma have been studied and compared to urinary cytology. In 93 per cent of the patients with urothelial carcinoma urinary fibrin/fibrinogen degradation product levels were elevated significantly. There was excellent correlation when the urinary cytology and urinary fibrin/fibrinogen degradation product results were compared together to cystoscopic findings.

Histochemical Androgen Binding Assay in Prostatic Cancer

Louis P. Pertschuk; Richard J. Macchia; Gilbert J. Wise; Sandor H. Wax; Hong Kim; Dong S. Kim; Jesse I. Abrahams; Harry W. Herr; Pramod C. Sogani; Willet F. Whitmore; Eric Gaetjens; Karen Byer Eisenberg; Joseph Feldman; Keith Waterhouse; Gerald P. Murphy; Avery A. Sandberg; James P. Karr

A group of 60 patients with clinical stage C or D prostatic carcinoma was evaluated for androgen binding using a histochemical assay. Of the patients positive for binding 82 per cent either responded to hormonal therapy or remained stable, while 100 per cent of those negative for binding had progression. Of 6 men whose cancer was considered borderline positive 2 manifested a partial clinical response, while 4 had progression.

Pattern of urolithiasis in Brooklyn, New York

M.M. Unni Mooppan; Hong Kim; Sandor H. Wax

Crystallographic analysis of 261 upper urinary tract calculi from patients in Brooklyn is presented. Calcium oxalate, uric acid, and struvite stones predominate. We could not confirm the hypothesis that uric acid forms a nidus in calcium oxalate urolithiasis in spite of a percentage of uric acid calculi more than twice the national average.

Peripelvic urinoma associated with benign pro static hypertrophy

Balbir Singh; Hong Kim; Sandor H. Wax

A case report of a large peripelvic urinoma which disappeared after decompression of a distended obstructed bladder is presented. The etiology of this rare complication of bladder outlet obstruction is reviewed and discussed.

A Comparison of Regional Hypothermia and Inosine in Renal Preservation

Frederick Greenstein; Hong Kim; Lewis Kanarek; Sandor H. Wax

Abstract Controversy still exists over the best method of preserving the in situ temporarily ischemic kidney. Using microsurgical techniques in rats, we evaluated inosine, regional hypothermia and a combination of both following 1 hour of renal ischemia. Statistical analysis revealed that regional hypothermia alone offered the best protection.
