Ana Cristina O. Siqueira; Sandra R. H. Mariano; Joysi Moraes

Abstract Considering a social enterprises relationships with complementors, suppliers, and customers within the broader context of an innovation ecosystem can help advance theory in the field of social entrepreneurship. Our qualitative study examines microfinance organizations in bottom-of-the-pyramid communities in Brazil. Our findings indicate that interactive relationships with complementors, suppliers, and customers can improve the microfinance organizations ability to support commercial transactions, manage financial capital, and educate customers, thereby improving its ability to facilitate economic development. These findings extend the literature on innovation ecosystems, microfinance, and social entrepreneurship.

Brazil: Leadership in Brazil

Sandra R. H. Mariano; Fabiane da Costa e Silva; Joysi Moraes

This chapter analyzes the literature on school leadership published in Brazilian journals from 2000 to 2013. The 46 articles found discuss five central topics: (1) state of the art and theory, (2) productive restructuring, (3) analysis and interpretation of government policy, (4) participative management, and (5) practices of the school principal. The analysis of the articles shows there are policies and management tools for the democratic management of the school and that they seek to involve the school community. It is also clear that those policies are not producing the desired results and that the tools for participation are not working as desired. Most of the articles are restricted to this point. One conclusion, therefore, is the lack of articles about leadership in school in Brazil. Therefore, with regard to agree with Martins (2008), when they suggest the need to conduct broader, survey-type studies in order to assess the real effects of educational policies. There is also a need for case studies that share the experiences of implementation of public policies in order to unravel the real particularities of the educational and school management processes in Brazil.

Ensinando a sociologia das "Raízes do Brasil": um diálogo entre um livro clássico e um filme histórico

Sidinei Rocha; Sandra R. H. Mariano

This article discusses the combined use of the film ‘ Maua - O Imperador e O Rei ’ and the book “Roots of Brazil” to deepen discussions on certain cultural traits arising from the history and their implications for organizations, as a teaching strategy. By choosing this method, we proposed to help the pupils appreciate the contribution made by sociology to the understanding of the formation of the country. The experience has shown that when using the film as a case where students could examine the concepts presented in the book, their grasp of the content and its transposition to the present day were more complete. This process of reflection shows that Management, despite being a practical field of knowledge, can be based on theoretical knowledge. However, for this relationship to be fully developed this ability needs to be stimulated throughout the training period of future managers by applying various activities that foster reflection, identification and the application of concepts in practice.

Unidades de la Policía Pacificadora (UPPs) en Rio de Janeiro: una historia que destaca las percepciones y reflexiones del responsable de su implementación

Joysi Moraes; Sandra R. H. Mariano; Andrea Marinho de Souza Franco

This paper shows one of the possible histories of the Police Pacification Units (UPPs) in Rio de Janeiro. It is highlighted the perceptions and reflections of the manager responsible for its implementation, Jose Mariano Beltrame, the Secretary of Public Security in Rio de Janeiro. It was used an oral history, a methodology that focuses on the present time through the narrative of the subjects that took part in the event or witnessed it. The Strategic Situational Planning (SSP) was used for the presentation and analysis of this story. SSP is a theoretical and methodological tool that consists of four stages: explanatory, normative, strategic and tactical-operational. The SSP, as a methodological tool, has enabled to articulate, in a logical way, the statements of the Secretary. It analysed the actions of the Secretary in a specific context and topic, highlighting the social and political game through the construction of one of the most important public policies in Rio de Janeiro, the UPPs. The reconstruction and analysis of the time of their implementation is an evidence that the understanding of the social game and the willingness of the Secretary are essential for a more effective public action. This paper shows one of the possible histories of the Police Pacification Units (UPPs) in Rio de Janeiro. Institutional and interpersonal trust and entrepreneurship: insights from relationship banking and microfinance in Brazil

Ana Cristina O. Siqueira; Sandra R. H. Mariano; Joysi Moraes; Larry W. Cox

We examine the value of trust in entrepreneurship by addressing the context of microfinance. We investigate the cases of three community banks providing microfinance in bottom-of-the-pyramid communities in Brazil. Using qualitative methods, we find that institutional trust seems to facilitate the operation of microfinance organisations that support entrepreneurship, while stimulating consumption within a community and the development of local small businesses. Additionally, interpersonal trust seems to facilitate the development of formal and informal businesses.
