Utilization of Electronic Cultural Atlas for Humanities: Area study based Digital Humanities

Ji-Hoon Kang; Sang-Ho Moon

As a methodology for academic studies, user requirements and use cases on systems which are fusion of specific academic disciplines and information technology are increasing. Digital Humanities is a research methodology, which means study methods or systems for Humanities, Area studies etc. Electronic cultural atlas is a form of convergence technology that is merged between IT and cultural contents, and it can be effectively utilized in academic researches. In this paper, we suggest methods to utilize electronic cultural atlas for Humanities and Area studies from the perspective of Digital Humanities. In details, we investigate both systems related to Digital Humanities and electronic cultural atlas at domestic and overseas perspective, and also study on methods to implement electronic cultural atlas effectively in the view of Digital Humanities. Design and Implementation of Electronic Culture Atlas Based on Google Earth

Ji-Hoon Kang; Sang-Ho Moon

ABSTRACT The development of information technology grows the society a nd allows the user to generate more information and the requirements. According to recent growing interest in digital convergence technologies, digital convergence can be utilized by a variety of methods as a new study. Electronic culture atlas would be digitized cultural information that represents a particular area on the map. In detail, spatial data like as point, line, and area can be used to represent the culture information. Using electronic culture atlas, also, it is possible to provide and utilize information which is associated with time, space(map) and subject(culture). Thus, electronic culture atlas could be used as a method for the humanities or area studies and spread research results by displaying on the culture atlas. In general, existing electronic culture atlas used bitmap image mostly as a base map. Using bitmap image, it is difficult to represent to provide three-dimensional information of specific area. Also, it happens problem such as breakage occurs during zoom-in operation. To solve this problems, we design and implement electronic culture atlas based on Google Earth which is three-dimensional map service.

A Study on the Method for Efficient Development of Digital Humanities System

Ji-Hoon Kang; Dong-Yul Lee; Sang-Ho Moon

Digital Humanities System is a method to effectively share and spread Humanities information and knowledge to users by using information technology. It Also comes into the spotlight as a new research methodology for researches of Humanities researchers. Digital Humanities System distinguishes itself from other existing information systems. Therefore, when the system is developed, it needs to supply with manpower related to development process which is specialized for Digital Humanities System, not for the several established construction methodology. Digital Humanities System studies recently is mostly Received (May 3, 2016), Review Result (May 18, 2016) Accepted (May 25, 2016), Published (July 31, 2016) 609-815 Institute for Mediterranean Studies, Busan University of Foreign Studies, Namsan-dong, Geumjeong-gu, Busan, Korea, email: [email protected] 609-815 Department of Global Area Studies, Gradute School Busan University of Foreign Studies, Namsan-dong, Geumjeong-gu, Busan, Korea email: [email protected] (Corresponding Author) 609-815 Department of Computer Engineering, Busan University of Foreign Studies, Namsan-dong, Geumjeong-gu, Busan, Korea, email: [email protected] * 이 논문은 2007년도 정부(교육부)의 재원으로 한국연구재단의 지원을 받아 수행된 연구임(KRF-2007-362-A00021) A Study on the Method for Efficient Development of Digital Humanities System Copyright c 2016 HSST 390 constructed using the usual methodology of information system construction. Because of its falling efficiency and usability after constructing the system, however, examples of failure of operating system occur. In this paper, accordingly, effective and creative Digital Humanities System development methodology will be studied from the point of view of information technology through collaboration with various field of expertise. In detail, based on information system methodologies in software engineering perspective, we propose a methodology to build a specialized system in the digital humanities.

Ji-Hoon Kang; Dong-Yul Lee; Sang-Ho Moon

Since interdisciplinary convergence could beyond the borders of each disciplines, it is able to create new and meaningful knowledge through collaborative research between different study areas. Especially, in recent years, the Digital Humanities has attracted the attention as the convergence form of the Humanities and ICT. From a research methodology perspective, the Digital Humanities is a tool that can be used as a convergence system for various information utilization such as storage, retrieve, share, and spread. In view of Information system, Digital Humanities has been constructed and used in a variety of systems. Among them, studies related to information visualization for the Digital Humanities have been actively conducted. A Study on Mediterranean Tourism Impact Analysis by Specific Events using Photo Sharing Website

Dong-Yul Lee; Ji-Hoon Kang; Sang-Ho Moon

Due to the variety of tourist attractions, many people of the world are visiting annually in Mediterranean area. In this paper, we analyze Mediterranean tourism impact by specific events such as the Arab Spring. In details, we make several density maps based on the position and time information of the geo-tagged photos extracted from Panoramio which is a representative photo sharing website. These density maps should be used to analyze how can specific events affect on Mediterranean tourism. To do this, first, Received (July 21, 2015), Review Request(July 22, 2015), Review Result(August 07, 2015) Accepted(August 28, 2015), Published(October 31, 2015) 609-815 Department of Global Area Studies, Gradute School Busan University of Foreign Studies, Namsan-dong, Geumjeong-gu, Busan, Korea email: [email protected] 609-815 Institute for Mediterranean Studies, Busan University of Foreign Studies, Namsan-dong, Geumjeong-gu, Busan, Korea email: [email protected] (Corresponding Author) 609-815 Department of Computer Engineering, Busan University of Foreign Studies, Namsan-dong, Geumjeong-gu, Busan, Korea email: [email protected] * 이 논문은 2007년도 정부(교육부)의 재원으로 한국연구재단의 지원을 받아 수행된 연구임(KRF-2007-362-A00021) A Study on Mediterranean Tourism Impact Analysis by Specific Events using Photo Sharing Website Copyright c 2015 HSST 168 a spatial database is constructed using geo-tag and time information of photo data extracted from Panoramio. Using GIS tool, then, several density maps are produced after performing density process based on spatial databases. Based on these density maps, finally, we analyze visually on Mediterranean tourism impact according to before, progress, and after of the Arab Spring.

A Study on the Utilization of Photo Contents based Electronic Cultural Atlas

Dong-Yul Lee; Ji-Hoon Kang; Sang-Ho Moon

As a form of convergence studies, many studies on electronic cultural atlas have been performed. In this paper, our objective is to design an electronic cultural atlas for utilizing photo contents based on display and sharing effect. This is one of the ways to effectively use various photo contents. Through electronic cultural atlas, photo contents are recognized as an object that contains a lot of information. To do this, we design an electronic cultural atlas for utilizing photo contents, and investigate the utilization differences through comparison with existing systems. In detail, we examine the limits of the traditional photo Received (February 23, 2015), Review request (February 24, 2015), Review Result (March 11, 2015) Accepted (March 26, 2015), Published (April 30, 2015) 609-815 Dept. of Global Area Studies, Graduate School Busan University of Foreign Studies, Namsan-dong, Geumjeong-gu, Busan, Korea email: [email protected] 609-815 Institute for Mediterranean Studies, Busan University of Foreign Studies, Namsan-dong, Geumjeong-gu, Busan, Korea email: [email protected] (Corresponding Author) 609-815 Dept. of Computer Engineering, Busan University of Foreign Studies, Namsan-dong, Geumjeong-gu, Busan, Korea email: [email protected] * 이 논문은 2014년도 정부(교육부)의 재원으로 한국연구재단의 지원을 받아 수행된 연구임 (KRF-2007-362-A00021) A Study on the Utilization of Photo
