Asymmetric motives in Indian bilateral cross-border joint ventures with G7 nations: impact of relative partner characteristics and initial conditions

Sanjay Dhir; Amita Mital

The determinants of asymmetric motives of partners in cross-border joint ventures (CBJV) have not been adequately explored in the context of developing nations. Though there are several empirical studies for motives of partners in CBJV in developed nations but, there is no systematic empirical evidence for the same in developing nations. Another lacuna is regarding studies which analyse antecedents to these asymmetries. This article analyses relative partner characteristics and initial CBJV conditions as antecedents to the degree of asymmetric motives between CBJV partner firms in developing nation. An empirical analysis of 201 bilateral CBJVs in India with G7 nations, for a time period of ten years (2000-2010), shows that while degree of asymmetric motives between partners firms enhances when relative culture difference, capital structure and inter-partner product-market overlap increases, higher level of diversification, critical activity alignment and resource heterogeneity decreases the degree of asymmetric motives between partner firms in CBJV.

Alliance network heterogeneity, absorptive capacity and innovation performance: a framework for mediation and moderation effects

Sanjay Dhir; Aniruddha; Amita Mital

The purpose of this paper is to present a perspective of alliance network heterogeneity, absorptive capacity and their effect on innovation performance. Although extant research recognises alliance network, network heterogeneity and absorptive capacity as predictor to innovation performance; mediation effect of network heterogeneity between innovation performance and its antecedents has been neglected. On the other hand, interaction effect of absorptive capacity has been widely researched, but these studies have not sufficiently analysed the influence of absorptive capacity on innovation performance due to conflicting results, especially regarding the multidimensional character of absorptive capacity. Present study intends to posit and set the stage for future research, whether relationship between innovation and its antecedents is mediated by firms alliance network heterogeneity. Furthermore, we posit whether absorptive capacity acts as mediator or moderator between alliance network heterogeneity and innovation performance.

Balanced scorecard on top performing Indian firms

Sanjay Dhir; Amita Mital; Swati Chaurasia

This paper aims to contribute towards the understanding of balanced scorecard (BSC) on top performing Indian firms. The paper empirically examines the extent to which there exists a cause-and-effect relationship among the four areas of BSC measurement. The structured equation modelling (SEM) analysis show that the BSC model fits well with the Indian firms. The results also suggest that the learning-growth perspective positively affects the internal processes and internal processes positively affect the customer perspective. On the other hand customer perspective negatively affects the financial performance of Indian firms. We also discuss the scope of future study in the area.

Global Competitiveness of Informal Economy Organizations

Sanjay Dhir; Sushil

This chapter presents a framework for informal economies in developing nations. It will explain linkages with the formal economies of both developing and developed nations as a function of national competitiveness . We develop propositions which explain how the dynamics and growth of the informal economy in developing nations are linked to the growth of the formal economy of developing/developed nations. The chapter illustrates the framework with the case of Jaipur Rugs and concludes with suggestions for future research in an under researched area of the informal economy.

MSME Competitiveness for the Global Value Chain—A TRIZ-Based Approach

Shishir Shrotriya; Sanjay Dhir

The Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector is one of the most vibrant sectors of growing economies like India. The MSMEs can play a crucial role in employment, globalization, and can be very effective in the Global Value Chain (GVC) owing to their entrepreneurial and innovation driven growth. India’s MSME sector has been facing stiff competition from large industry houses and global players. In this dynamically changing environment, it is important to work out and implement an effective growth and consolidation plan, through structured research. TRIZ is the Russian acronym for the “Theory of Inventive Problem Solving” is an analytical approach for innovative problem solving which has been applied in a variety of spheres related to management and technology. This chapter focuses on deriving the factors and solutions which are significant for strengthening the MSME clusters in India through a TRIZ-based approach. The authors have chosen to apply the TRIZ methodology in the context of the Electronic Goods sector in India. This can be suitably tailored to focus toward other sectors following the approach suggested by the authors of this chapter.

Technology Transfer and Innovation in Global International Joint Ventures—Emerging Markets’ Perspective

Nakul Parameswar; Sanjay Dhir

International Joint Ventures (IJVs) formed by firms in emerging markets have been extensively examined to provide an avenue for learning, technology transfer and innovation. Outward Foreign Direct Investment (OFDI) from emerging markets to other nations has been increasing in the last few decades. Wholly owned subsidiaries and global IJVs are two prominent forms of OFDI from emerging markets. There is a need to examine global IJVs ability to facilitate learning, technology transfer and innovation in emerging market firms. This study attempts to explore the effect of two important factors: type of IJVs and interdependence between parent firms on learning, technology transfer and innovation from global IJVs formed by emerging market firms abroad. Case study methodology has been used to examine the propositions. The study finds that learning, technology transfer and innovation are facilitated in global IJVs irrespective of the type of IJVs or interdependence between parent firms.
