Towards a Better Understanding of the Tribe Aniseieae: Revisiting Aniseia and Iseia (Convolvulaceae)

Sarah Maria Athiê-Souza; George W. Staples; Carmen Sílvia Zickel; Maria Teresa Buril

Abstract In this paper we propose a new circumscription of Aniseia that includes Iseia and reduces Aniseia martinicensis var. ambigua and A. cernua to the synonymy of A. martinicensis. The new combination Aniseia luxurians is made. The three species of Aniseia recognized herein are characterized by simple trichomes; simple leaves with entire margin, mucronate apex and eucamptodromous venation; axillary cymose inflorescences, or solitary flowers; unequal to subequal sepals; campanulate corolla; single style; glandular trichomes at bases of filaments, sagittate anthers, and 2-globose and papillose stigma. Furthermore, twelve new synonyms and eleven lectotypifications are proposed herein. We provide an identification key, illustrations, comments on geographical distribution, and specimen-based distribution maps, as well as taxonomic and nomenclatural information.

Abstract Gradyana franciscana, a new genus and species of Euphorbiaceae found in the São Francisco river valley, in the semiarid region of northeastern Brazil, is herein described and illustrated. Gradyana is morphologically close to Stillingia due to the presence of carpidiophore and foliar glands, but differs in possessing strictly axillary sinuous thyrsoid staminate inflorescences, solitary pistillate flowers, apical glands in the bracts, long-stipitate glands between pistillate sepals, and staminate flowers with three stamens and three sepals. A key to differentiate Gradyana from other genera of the tribe Hippomaneae occurring in South America is presented. Comments about its geographic distribution, habitat, and conservation status are also provided.

Revisionary studies of Dalechampia sect. Dalechampia have revealed the 48 need to lectotypify D. colorata and that it represents a distinct species rather than a 49 synonym of D. tiliifolia. Dalechampia karsteniana is interpreted to be a synonym of D. 50 colorata. 51 52

Dalechampia erythrostyla (Euphorbiaceae), a New Species from Northeastern Brazil

Rafaela Alves Pereira-Silva; Sarah Maria Athiê-Souza; Ricardo de S. Secco; André Laurênio de Melo; Margareth Ferreira de Sales

Abstract A new species of Dalechampia from Brazil is described and illustrated. Dalechampia erythrostyla is a twining vine and forms relatively dense populations in a disturbed area of the Atlantic Forest, where it has been facing a high risk of extinction. This species is superficially similar to D. alata, D. papillistigma, D. pentaphylla, D. purpurata, and D. violacea, but it differs from them in multiple morphological aspects, including leaf division, size of petiolar stipules and stipels, leaflet shape, number and color of lobes of involucral bracts, number and margin of pistillate sepals, color, size, and shape of stigma.

Biologia reprodutiva e flores de óleo em Cipura paludosa (Iridaceae)

Juliana Silva dos Santos; Sarah Maria Athiê-Souza; Natan Messias Almeida; Cibele Cardoso de Castro

Cipura paludosa is taxonomically placed in the Iridaceae family which is notable for the diversity of pollination systems, offering resources such as nectar, pollen and oil. The study was conducted within a fragment of Atlantic Forest in Recife, Pernambuco, to investigate the floral and reproductive biology of C. paludosa. The floral opening period, stigmatic receptivity, anther dehiscense, number of pollen grains, ovules per flower and floral morphology were evaluated; experiments regarding to the reproductive system and flower visitor observations were performed. Cipura paludosa is a herbaceous plant with melittophilous and self-compatible flowers, visited by Plebeia sp. and Augochlora thalia. The flower resources produced by C. paludosa were pollen and oil (produced in trichomal elaiophores). To ensure reproductive success Cipura paludosa benefits from pollination services since it produces only a few fruits spontaneously. The presence of bees not specialized in oil collecting may result in poor quality pollination services consequently reducing the species reproductive output.

Reinstatement and Lectotypification of Stillingia loranthacea (Euphorbiaceae), a Vulnerable Species from Chapada Diamantina, Bahia (Brazil), and a New Circumscription of Stillingia saxatilis

Sarah Maria Athiê-Souza; André Laurênio de Melo; Marcos José da Silva; Margareth Ferreira de Sales

Abstract Although Stillingia loranthacea has commonly been considered a synonym of Stillingia saxatilis, it is reinstated to specific status in the present study. Stillingia loranthacea differs from S. saxatilis due to its orange-brown to dark brown bark, leaves sessile to subsessile (up to 4 mm long), obovate to elliptic-obovate with apex obtuse to rounded, base attenuate to decurrent, venation brochidodromous, and glands scutelliform. Both species are described and illustrated herein, including observations on habitat and conservation status, a map of distribution, a key, and a table containing distinctive characters. A lectotype is chosen for S. loranthacea.
