A Stress Management Course To Prevent Teacher Distress.

The question of teacher motivation is of paramount concern for educational leaders and managers. Both the commonly observed deficiency in teacher motivation and the abundance of teacher stress are serious problems that can be mitigated through teacher education. This study describes a relational‐training stress‐management course that was prepared and implemented in an attempt to reduce teacher stress. The 30‐hour programme was divided into ten sessions that included thematic exercises on a variety of topics: sharing professional experiences with colleagues, identifying specific stress factors and possible coping strategies, replacing irrational beliefs with more appropriate beliefs, analysing strategies for dealing with student discipline and motivation problems in the classroom, and practising assertiveness and relaxation. Following the course, participating teachers showed a significant decrease in their irrational beliefs and professional distress, as well as an increase in professional motivation and the perception of wellbeing.

Intrinsic Motivation and Creativity Related to Product: A Meta-analysis of the Studies Published Between 1990–2010

Although the relationship between motivation (especially intrinsic motivation) and creativity (especially as a product), no meta-analyses have been conducted on the relationship between these 2 concepts. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between intrinsic motivation and creativity related to product (i.e., creative outcomes) through meta-analytical procedures. Fifteen papers were analysed, including 26 independent samples (N = 6,435 participants). The results revealed a significant positive relationship between intrinsic motivation and creativity related to product ( = .30, 95% CI = [.22, .37]). The homogeneity tests indicated that this relationship was influenced by some moderators such as type of research design. Cross-sectional studies report a significantly stronger association between the two concepts compared to those that used a causality-oriented design; t(24) = 4.86, p = .001. Also, there were no significant differences between students and employees samples regarding this relationship; t(24) = .45, p = .66. These results have implications for settings where creativity related to product is essential. Based on the limits of this study, several research directions on the topic of motivation and creativity are presented.

Psychopathic traits and age of crime onset in male juvenile delinquents

The aim of this study was to examine the role of psychopathic traits in the crime onset age of male juvenile delinquents. A group of early crime onset (n = 102), a group of late crime onset (n = 102), and a non-delinquent group (n = 102) were formed from a sample of 306 male youths from Portuguese juvenile detention centres and schools. Results showed that early crime onset participants scored higher on psychopathic measures, self-reported delinquency, crime seriousness and conduct disorder than late crime onset participants, and the non-delinquent participants. Psychopathic-traits scores showed significant associations with age of crime onset, age at first encounter with the law, age of first incarceration, self-reported delinquency, seriousness of crime and conduct disorder.

Age of Crime Onset and Psychopathic Traits in Female Juvenile Delinquents

The aim of this study was to analyze the role of psychopathic traits in the age of crime onset of female juvenile delinquents. Using a sample of 132 young females from the Juvenile Detention Centers of the Portuguese Ministry of Justice and from schools in the Lisbon region, a group of early crime onset (n = 44), a group of late crime onset (n = 44), and a nondelinquent school group (n = 44) were formed. Results showed that early crime onset participants score higher on psychopathy measures, self-reported delinquency, and crime seriousness than late crime onset participants and school participants. Psychopathic-traits scores were significantly associated with age of crime onset, age at first trouble with the law, and frequency and seriousness of crime.

Depression and sleep quality in older adults: a meta-analysis

Abstract The literature emphasizes depression and poor sleep quality as problems that affect many elderly individuals. However, these problems have been related in few studies and there is no meta-analysis performed so far on this relationship. The present research reviewed the studies performed on the subjective sleep quality in order to understand how it relates to depression in older adults. The review was conducted in January 2016 and comprised publications between 2005 and 2015. Based on the electronic databases Web of Science and EBSCO, we used the keywords ‘sleep quality’, ‘depression’, and ‘older’ to identify the empirical studies performed. After assessing the collected studies, we selected those that presented the elderly as participants, resulting in nine papers (N = 3069). A random-effects method was used to evaluate the relationship between depression and sleep. We found that an older person’s lack of good sleep quality is significantly related with depression. The main limitation of this study was the difficulty in collecting a greater number of studies. Future research should consider the importance of additional variables (e.g. moderators) in order to understand and investigate viable interventions for prevention and health promotion in the elderly.

This work discusses the penetration of the idea of “Third Sector” into Brazil, its inscription in the debates about the State´s reform, and the reestablishment of new relations between the economic sector and the civil companionship. In addition, it is seeking to demonstrate that the possibilities of the emancipation of the civil society can not be reduced to the institucional instumentality in the Third Sector approaches. The metaphorses that the brazilian civil society undergoes in the 90´s, if in one hand seal its instrumentalization, in another hand show that new drives of democatization associated mainly with the introduction of new cultural values emerge from that society.Neste trabalho analisa-se a politica habitacional no Uruguai, em particular as acoes dirigidas aos setores de baixa renda. O novo modelo de politica implantado, baseado na descentralizacao, co-participacao, focalizacao, co-financiamento, subsidio a demanda, enfase nos objetivos, supoe-se, a priori, melhor que o tradicional, mas suscetivel a muito debate quanto a equacao eficiencia/equidade. A analise realizada sobre a politica habitacional verifica a equidade horizontal e a equidade vertical, assim como o carater progressivo da estrutura de subsidios. No entanto, a dimensao social apresenta efeitos negativos como a fragmentacao e a vulnerabilidade social que infringem a tradicao uruguaia de integracao. O Uruguai estruturou uma matriz de bem-estar, baseada em politicas sociais universalistas, ainda que, paulatinamente, tenha se voltado para politicas focalizadas contudo, se nas primeiras decadas do seculo XX, buscou-se consolidar segmentos especificos, as ultimas reformas tem tido um sentido de exclusao e segregacao social.This article has the aim of contextualizing the health policy in Brazil, emphasizing the role that had an collective actor, the Brazilian Sanitary Movement, on the construction of a health system permeated by the principles of Universality, Integrality and Equity. The article also has the intention of making an analysis of SUS, implementation process, emphasizing the Brazilian Sanitary Movements theoretic and political limits.The present article seeks to analyze human rights from a gender perspective. To do so, it goes back to the past to explain the development of the society of rights and women’s rights. The analysis starts from the premise that human rights are social products and therefore will reflect and represent the values and interests of the society that produced them, in this case, capitalist society. One of the values of this society is patriarchy and the idea of the superiority of men as a social actor in relation to women. This value is represented in human rights that nevertheless have universality as one of its characteristics: the idea that all people are subjects of such rights independently of any identities. Therefore, the legal text in which human rights were coined affirms an equality that does not exist in practice, since women are violated and their rights are violated every day, in addition to the gender inequality present throughout the world. As an example and materialization of this reality, the Campo Algodonero Case, introduced to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, appears as the first case of the Court to mention femicide, showing the vulnerability of women’s life and integrity.O artigo problematiza alguns resultados de pesquisa sobre a incorporacao da educacao infantil aos sistemas municipais de ensino, a partir de um estudo comparativo entre quatro municipios do estado do Rio de Janeiro: Rio, Niteroi, Sao Goncalo e Nova Iguacu. Estes municipios possuem diferentes tradicoes politicas e diferentes formas de organizacao da educacao voltada para criancas de 0 a 6 anos, pertencentes aos segmentos mais pauperizados da populacao. Os resultados parciais ora apresentados foram analisados a partir de algumas reflexoes sobre as manifestacoes da cultura politica local e da forte tradicao assistencial no processo de integracao da educacao infantil aos sistemas municipais de ensino. Associam-se a estas reflexoes uma abordagem sobre os problemas vivenciados pelos municipios que, a luz das politicas macroestruturais de inspiracao neoliberais vem assumindo a educacao infantil apontando para os limites e impasses desta incorporacao.Presented by the founder and Chair of the First Women’s Worlds, held in Israel in 1981- 82, this article historicizes the development of this international interdisciplinary congress up to its 13th edition in Brazil. The emergence of a number of social movements, their struggles and support for na alternative and solidary globalization, where human dignity can be the prism through which a possible new world is envisaged. Future challenges are brought into the scene so as to highlight common elements and discuss divergences, thus overcoming this initial movement of contestation of the present model of society.This paper presents some reflections and experiences related to the practice of the “Estagio Curricular Obrigatorio” (Obligatory Training Period) at the “Nucleo de Estudos em Servico Social e Organizacao Popular (NESSOP/UFSC)” (Nucleus of Studies in Social Work and Popular Organization), reported in the “Trabalho de Conclusao de Curso” (Course Final Paper). First, fundamental elements of methodological intervention of the Social Work in support to the organization of Regional Seminars of the “Forum da Cidade” (City Forum) are addressed. Then, participation in the struggle for the right to the city is contextualized, with emphasis on the role of the “Estatuto da Cidade” (City Statute). Finally, participation from people´s daily life is discussed, focusing on the potential revealed by the various forms of expression of associative life.O presente trabalho faz referencia a crise atual localizando-a como estrategica. Nele o novo cenario mundial chamado globalizacao, implica em uma ruptura dos esquemas referenciais operatorios da sociedade e em mudancas nas praticas sociais. Sao apresentadas ideias para o debate das novas configuracoes e das novas subjetividades com as posicoes do Servico Social nesse contexto.Uma humanidade articulada em um processo historico que abarca a vida de todos os homens resultou, nao em existencias genericas ricas e multifacetadas, mas sim em individualidades solitarias e amedrontadas. Notamos que a reforma do Estado brasileiro vem seguindo as diretrizes internacionais, procurando adequar o mercado e o Estado as novas configuracoes do sistema capitalista, tomando medidas que incidem diretamente sobre a area social e as politicas publicas de modo geral. E neste contexto, que procuramos analisar a Reforma da Previdencia Social e o desmantelamento do servico publico, decorrentes das mudancas na forma de intervencao do Estado e o rebatimento sobre o funcionalismo publico.No presente trabalho destaca-se a importância de que exista um conceito univoco do Terceiro Setor. Em primeiro lugar, justifica-se esta relevância conceitual desde um ponto de vista epistemologico, tanto para o estudo dos fatos sociais (objeto de conhecimento), quanto para a propria configuracao das comunidades cientificas (sujeito do conhecimento). Em segundo lugar, argumenta-se tambem essa necessidade de univocidade ja que condiciona as diferentes politicas publicas, e porque incide na integracao dos agentes que contribuem para a mudanca social. Por ultimo, sao abordados os rasgos que podem, por um lado, delimitar este espaco social proprio, e por outro, caracterizar as particularidades das entidades que operam em ele.The article analyzes the relationship and articulation of the called Benefit of Continued Installment with de warranty of the right to the Social Assistence, established in the Federal Constitution of 1988 and the Organic Law of the Social Assistence – LOAS, promulgated in 1993. Discusses the conception of the benefit, as a right and regular right, face to the group of provisions that should compose a Social Attendance policy, able to propitiate the attendance to the basic needs of who of her demand. Sumary the marches and against marches of the process of regulation of the Benefit, demonstrating its reduced direction, culminating with the recent process of revision of the concession that will almost reach 500 thousand old and deficiency people.O presente artigo trata da regulacao publica da violencia privada, examinando seu aparato legal. Elege a experiencia inglesa como forma de problematizar a questao. Enfatiza o proeminente papel dos assistentes sociais como principais executores do servico de protecao ingles. Ao final estabelece um tratamento relacional entre o Children Act/1989 e o Estatuto da Crianca e do Adolescente � ECA/1990.O controle racional dos impulsos e atos agressivos tem sido considerado, desde o seculo XVIII, como um dos sinonimos da civilizacao. A historia nos mostra que as manifestacoes de violencia tiveram caracteristicas peculiares em cada epoca, em que as formas mais barbaras e crueis conviviam com as suas formas mais sutis. Estudos de diferentes areas mostram que a violencia que ocorre nos centros urbanos e no ambiente familiar e potencializada por varios fatores de ordem social como a pobreza, o desemprego, a exclusao social, o consumo e trafico de drogas, o alcoolismo, as aglomeracoes urbanas etc. Considerando as diferentes manifestacoes de violencia, vemos que os seus motivos nem sempre sao conscientes, havendo motivos de natureza inconsciente que podem esclarecer muitos atos humanos, ajudando a lancar luz sobre este assunto que reputamos ser de grande complexidade.This article maps the participation of women in Brazilian scientific production in the areas of Political Science and International Relations, from 2006 to 2016. To do so, six indicators were created, to measure women’s participation in the production of master’s dissertations, doctoral theses and scientific papers, as well as their participation as faculty members of graduate programs and their presence on editorial boards of important Brazilian Journals in these fields. The results revealed that, despite an increasing participation of women in recent years, the space they occupy is still underrepresented, especially when considering strategic positions related to education and research.The present article discusses the Social Control of the public policy of Social Assistance. First of all takes the contemporary debate concerning that policy and, to proceed, problematize the Social Control in the ambit of three distincts perspectives one of the “control society”, in sense that is it given by Michel Foucault, other of the Reform of the Brazilian State and the one of the Social Assistance policy. Finally, punctuate the limits and challenges to the exercise of that Control, in sense of offering subsidies to the Social Assistance effectiveness in democratic and participant bases.This article presents the results of a piece of research entitled “Emergence of Third Sector Organizations: Learning to Manage”, which aimed at understanding the different strategies, techniques and ways of carrying out the management of community-based associations, located in the metropolitan area of Florianopolis. This descriptive and exploratory research was carried out within the context of community-based associations and it systematizes a set of information on the issue. The study generated knowledge on the workings of five of such associations by shedding light on their ways of structuring and managing themselves. The object investigated tackles complex issues involving a number of concepts debated both in academic contexts and in society in general. The study does not seek to discuss whether such organizations belong or not in the so-called “third sector”, “social economy” or “solidary economy”. It does seek, however, to contribute to the debate related to the topic by making some empirical findings available to the reader.O presente artigo trata da analise de falas expressas por voluntarios que atuam junto a Grupos de Convivencia de Idosos. Caracteriza-se por uma pesquisa de tipo qualitativo, construida a partir de encontros de voluntarios, promovidos por entidades governamentais e organizacoes nao-governamentais. Utilizamos o dialogo como mediacao dos encontros, buscando constituir a polifonia das significacoes enunciativas, construindo um conhecimento intersubjetivo sobre o tema Terceira Idade e capa-citando-nos para uma acao mais consciente e democratica.A violencia domestica e um tema bastante discutido na atualidade. Este artigo trata da situacao economica como fator capaz de contribuir para o aumento desta violencia. O estudo e ilustrado por uma pesquisa realizada na Delegacia da Mulher de Florianopolis, onde fica clara a posicao das mulheres e as dificuldades que tem de perceberem seus direitos. Mas e necessario debater o tema, pois assim poderemos contribuir para que as mulheres rompam com as formas de submissao que marcam suas vidas e entendam, que a conquista da independencia economica e o primeiro passo para estabelecerem relacoes de igualdade entre os generos.Tema presente na midia, no discurso politico, nos planos e programas governamentais e nao governamentais, o trabalho infantil e um fenomeno social existente em todo o mundo. A discussao desta tematica revela, de maneira contundente, que algumas parcelas da sociedade tem se alertado para esta problematica. O trabalho infantil, aliado a baixa escolaridade, acaba por gerar a baixa qualidade de vida destas criancas e adolescentes, bem como sua ma qualificacao profissional. Foi com a preocupacao voltada a estes pequenos trabalhadores do municipio de Sao Jose que desenvolvemos nosso estudo exploratorio. No intuito de desvelar o Trabalho Infantil, nao apenas atento a realidade isolada das familias que vivem em situacao de exclusao, mas tambem atento a necessidade de discutir novas formas de trabalho que as tornem sujeitos e objetos principais da nossa intervencao. Assim, destacaremos a realidade vivida por estas criancas e adolescentes e ressaltaremos o trabalho do Servico Social junto a suas familias.A version of this paper was delivered at the International Seminar “Reunificar a Cidade” (Reunifying the City), organized by the Secretaria do Trabalho da Prefeitura da Cidade do Rio de Janeiro (Labor Secretariat of Rio de Janeiro City Hall) in May 2000 as part of a major reflection process on public policies and on the struggle against poverty. The APD-Rio Program (specific object of the present study) was a locus of experimentation associated with this reflection, particularly regarding the identification of new spaces, development directions and urban integration, the recognition of the social actors at local level and partnership formation among the different actors (public, private and civil society actors) and the integration of social, urban and economic development policies.Este artigo e recorte do Trabalho de Conclusao de Curso de Servico Social, seu objeto de estudo e a analise do processo de implantacao do Programa de Saude da Familia � PSF, na Unidade de Saude da Regiao do Monte Cristo � bairro da periferia do municipio de Florianopolis � no periodo de 1996 a 1998. Tem como eixo central a analise das questoes apresentadas como entraves para a efetivacao do PSF, e aponta algumas mudancas ocorridas com a implantacao desse programa. Estao presentes, tambem, as consideracoes e conclusoes relativas aos resultados da pesquisa, que apontam as possibilidades e limites para a construcao de um novo modelo assistencial.The Brazilian Social Policy recognized legally as a social right by the constitution in 1988 confronted and still confronts restrictions and limits to be consolidated as social policy.This text renders problematic and tries to present some answers to this difficulty, having as referential the complex and conflicting relation between assistance and work in the capitalist societies. It occurs, as an impact of this relation, a movement of retrocession in the rights conquered with increasing focalization of the benefits, programs, projects and services and reduction of the resources destined to the assisted area.The topics “knowledge gaining” and “knowledge dissemination” are closely linked to organizational learning and knowledge. Such subjects have had great repercussion in the last years both in the academic and in the business fields. Several authors have emphasized the need for the organizations to concern themselves with organizational learning and knowledge. In this context, this study aims at understanding how identification, gaining and dissemination of knowledge in a Data System State Organization is processed. The organization investigated was INFO (fictitious name), which is responsible for the management of the government data services.Este trabalho busca refletir sobre os novos desafios colocados aos analistas da realidade socioeconomica, politica e cultural neste novo milenio, atraves da apresentacao de consideracoes sobre a ampliacao da conquista dos direitos sociais, o requisito de respeito aos direitos culturais dos povos e suas diferencas, as politicas publicas focalizadas vigentes, e os efeitos da globalizacao economica excludente. O texto se divide em duas partes: a primeira, constroi um campo referencial teorico, a partir de algumas categorias, assinalando a importância do tema dos direitos como eixo na questao da cidadania, e a segunda parte faz uma analise do tema dos direitos culturais, fundamental na agenda das questoes sociais contemporâneas.

Motivação docente: estudo bibliométrico da relação com variáveis individuais, organizacionais e atitudes laborais

Resumo A motivacao dos professores e essencial para o sucesso das politicas educativas. Ao estudar-se a motivacao docente e necessario examinar caracteristicas da escola e do professor. Devido a importância deste tema, torna-se fulcral analisar as investigacoes efetuadas sobre o mesmo, levando em conta variaveis organizacionais, dado que a escola e uma organizacao, mas tambem o capital psicologico positivo e a satisfacao no trabalho. Assim, recorreu-se a um estudo bibliometrico utilizando-se a base de dados Web of Science (WoS), onde se definiu o periodo de pesquisa para os anos 2000–2013 e se consideraram unicamente os trabalhos pertencentes a area da psicologia. No total, 33 documentos cumpriram os criterios de inclusao, verificando-se que: (a) 2012 foi o ano com mais publicacoes; (b) a satisfacao no trabalho foi o construto mais estudado com a motivacao docente; (c) a categoria psicologia educacional registou mais documentos; e (d) o ingles foi a lingua dominante nestes trabalhos. Os Estados Unidos da America e o Canada obtiveram os valores mais elevados nos indicadores bibliometricos numero de documentos (Ndoc) e numero de investigadores (Nres), apresentando Israel uma produtividade (Prod) superior a dos restantes paises. Estes resultados sao discutidos, bem como as principais implicacoes dos mesmos.

Intervention Program on Adolescent's Creativity Representations and Academic Motivation

Creativity and its promotion are widespread concerns in education. However, few efforts have been made to implement intervention programs designed to promote creativity and other related aspects (e.g., academic motivation). The Future Problem Solving Program International (FPSPI), aimed for training creativity representations and creative problem solving skills in young people, has been one of the most implemented programs. This interventions materials and activities were adapted for Portuguese students, and a longitudinal study was conducted. The program was implemented during four months, in weekly sessions, by thirteen teachers. Teachers received previous training for the program and during the programs implementation. Intervention participants included 77 Basic and Secondary Education students, and control participants included 78 equivalent students. Pretest-posttest measures of academic motivation and creativity representations were collected. Results suggest a significant increase, in the intervention group, in motivation and the appropriate representations of creativity. Practical implications and future research perspectives are presented.

Development and validation of the Family Feedback on Child Welfare Services (FF-CWS)

Objective: The measurement of Family Feedback on Child Welfare Services (FF-CWS) is gaining prominence as an efficacy indicator and is coherent with concerns about family-centered practice and empowerment. The aim of this study was to develop and validate an instrument that would overcome the scarcity of psychometrically sound measures in this field. Methods: Following item construction and selection, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses with a sample of 263 Spanish (52%) and Portuguese (48%) caregivers of children involved with CWS were conducted. Results: Three subscales were identified: Intervention Efficacy, Perception of Workers, and Satisfaction with the Intervention Process. In general, all dimensions showed good reliability, convergent, and criterion-related validity results. Multigroup analyses confirmed measurement invariance for both countries. Conclusions: The FF-CWS Questionnaire is a brief self-report measure that can be a useful assessment tool to frontline practitioners, agency managers, and policy makers for program evaluation and planning.

Examining Ethnic Differences in Self-Reported Psychopathic Traits Among Portuguese Male Juvenile Offenders

The aim of the present study was to analyze differences regarding psychopathic traits and related constructs in male youths of diverse ethnic backgrounds. The participants were 216 male youths from the Juvenile Detention Centers of the Portuguese Ministry of Justice (White Europeans group: n = 108; ethnic minorities group: n = 108). Psychopathy was measured by the Antisocial Process Screening Device and the Child and Adolescent Taxon Scale. The results showed that no differences were found between ethnic groups regarding psychopathic traits and psychopathy taxon. Independent of ethnic group membership, psychopathic trait scores were significantly associated with behavioral problems, conduct disorder, self-reported delinquency, seriousness of criminal activity, age of criminal activity onset, and age at first trouble with the law. The present study adds support to the literature regarding youth psychopathic traits and supports the psychopathy construct as universally and interculturally consistent.
