Numerical Simulation of Fluids Interacting with Moving Rigid Bodies

The numerical simulation of fluid-structure interaction has become an important field in engineering science. Since efficient programs exist for the solution of the individual subproblems, coupling schemes have to be developed which allow the use of existing and optimized solution strategies and methods. In this paper two different algorithms are used to couple the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and the structural dynamics problem: an explicit and an implicit coupling of a predictorcorrector type. In the latter internal iteration are performed to ensure the energy conservation between the structure and the fluid. The grid velocity has to be taken into account within the Navier-Stokes equations applying a space conservation law.
